Having recently purchased two cars both registered in 1973 I was wondering if they may have been built in 1972 and therefore be tax exempt? Its a longshot but worth a try, anyway my question is how do I find out the build date?

need the chassis number .... this will give an idea of wether it is 72 or 73 ( based on being an early or late car in teh production run). Ian ( early 911 reg sec) should also be able to help as I think he has access to the RHD production database If Ian can't help you'll need to contact Porsche for a build sheet, although this costs money.

The VIN was shown in some of the original pictures; 9113201030. That makes it very close to the end of the production run of 1366 1973 911Es, so it is almost certainly a 1973 build. In any case you should get a copy of the Certificate of Originality (CoA) by contacting Porsche Cars in Reading

The good Dr Johnsons book quotes the Chassis Number at the end of December 1972 for 911E Coupe is 911 320 0584 so any higher number would be a 1973 build and therefore subject to Annual Road Tax. Incidentally when asked the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) who were pushing the government to reinstate the rolling 25 year Road Tax Free position that was stopped by Gordon Brown. The government apparently answered that the lack of the tax free situation would be solved by the introduction of Road Pricing........!

Thanks Robin,
Thought it was a long shot, the 914 was originaly purchased in june 73' so looks like that will be the same.
Oh well, my luck could only go so far.

I made a note to look this up when back in the UK. Manufactured April 1st 1973.

Keith if you email me at 911@porscheclubgb.com I've got some other information you might be interested in.

Ian.
