Good afternoon,

The 944 is in the final prep stages before the respray and have had a mad thought about the front lamps on the turbo PU.

I have made-up a mock-up of how it might look and would be grateful for any comments. Usually I am one for originality, but I quite fance a "unique" look for my car now.

So the question is "with" or "without" the lower lamps?

Cheers guys.

Of those choices I'd say "with", but if you replaced the lamp spaces with some aesthetically pleasing air intake for brake cooling etc. I might go for that.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]What will you do about parking lights if you lose the big lamp units?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I'd say "with" too.

Won't your full beams also be dysmal without the driving lights? And how will you flash people?

Aesthetically I like it, why not go for the full "cal" look and remove the door handles, smooth out the depression and replace with hidden microswitches. It will complement the smooth lines of the 944. Replace the wing mirrors with the 968 versions.
Howver, functionally - I aggree with everyone above, the driving lamps are a must.[:(]

I didn't say they are a must, and I don't see why they are. What I said is that it doesn't look good with the lamps filled in as the other openings avoid the area pointlessly, but if something else were let into the space where the lights used to be then it might look good.

I've phoned the tester at our MOT station to ask if the lower lights are required for the MOT. Waiting for a reply ...

I agree that it looks strange having a blank area.

I know Fen uses clear indicators which are subdivided to accommodate parking lights (which must be slightly dubious legally) but I am concerned about not having a headlamp flashing facility. I would have thought this would be a legal requirement.

As a trial you could get some red pinstripe tape and run horizontal lines across your lamps either 1:1 or 1:2 tape to gap and see how that looks.

I did this on the rear of my Westfield and it looked OK.

There's nothing of dubious legality about my lighting I'll have you know! I thought I'd need to be able to flash lights and therefore investigated the MoT and construction and use regs only to find that the guidelines are about which lights flash if there are flashable lights. There is no requirement to have flashable lights. Similarly there is no problem having the parking and indicator lights behind the same lens, and Porsche were good enough to provide a section to split the reflector in two behind the lens (because the US spec cars have an orange running light and separate indicator) which keeps them nicely separate.

Just to add that I guess in practice I sometimes like to be able to flash my lights - you can push the main beam stalk forward then turn them on and off again, or if I was that bothered I could work out how the MX5 (which comically pops the lights up, flashes and drops them again) is wired up.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I don't actually notice much if any difference in main beam performance through not having the driving lamps, which makes me wonder if they are too low to be of any use anyway.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

It always looks odd to see a car without a number plate, so I'm not sure if it's the lack of lights or the lack of a plate that makes that first pic look unnatural.

If you're going to delete the lights then I think it would make better to delete the huge indicators also (but that would lead to another problem of where to put them [&:])

I wonder what large squareish intakes/grills with the fancy wing like LED indicators 997 turbo stylee would look? You could put some tasty oil coolers behind the grill.

The painter at our bodyshop has talked me into filling all available gaps in the air inlets of the front PU with chrome mesh.

I've asked him if it is easily removable as i'm not convinced it will look good but i'm curious to see his vision ... i'll find out next friday when i collect the finished article.

I just can't wait. (so much so i've been driving a 924S i bought to run about in while the 944 has its MAJOR cosmetic surgery).

Wonder if that would work with the wife??

Stick a great big pair or round "Rally Giants" in there, scooby style!!

it would look different for sure.......!??!
