ZDDP Additive for Engine Oil

Hi Folks,

Does anyone use any ZDDP additive for their engine oils? I happened upon this today quite by chance. TIPEC Forum discussion about Oils and ZDDP additives.

To cut a long waffle short, ZDDP used to be included in high levels in engine oils when our cars were designed. Recent emissions laws and the introduction of OBDII and different Catalytic converter designs required lower and lower ZDDP levels. These lower levels can be harmful to our engines.

It is explained from a commercial perspective in this ZDDPlus vendor youtube video.

I am thinking about buying some to add to my fresh oil. Does anyone else use this? Buy ZDDPlus Additive in the UK.
 
Millers CFS 5w-40, 10w-50, and 10w-60 have 1400ppm ZDDP
Miller's Trident 5w40 fully synthetic 0.18% zddp (1800 ppm)
Comma Race oil which is a 5W/50 & 1100ppm of ZDDP
Fuchs Titan Pro R 15W/50 1400ppm ZDDP

For decent levels of ZDDP look at the ester based performance oils such as the Fuchs Titan Race, Motul 300v, Millers CFS, Gulf Competition etc. These all have ZDDP levels of around 1400ppm and to be honest this is more than enough, any more (adding additives) will not achieve anything

Any oil marked API SM/SN, ILSAC GF-4/5 or ILSAC CJ-5 in grades SAE 0W-20, SAE 5W-20, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-30 and SAE 10W-30 cannot have sufficient ZDDP because the grades ARE NOT exempt.
I doubt anyone would consider using these grades in our engines anyway.
API SM spec oils in the above thin viscosities will contain between 600 and 800ppm ZDDP.

Consider 1000ppm ZDDP as an absolute minimum for decent anti-wear protection in older design engines - in particular so-called 'flat-tappet' designs.

Doing any kind of research on oils makes you lose the will to live!
