Zoinks! My car stalled

Just what I need before an early-morning drive to the airport tomorrow. [] Okay, here's the basic scenario:

At lunchtime today I had been driving/accelerating pretty quickly for a couple of minutes, and at the end of the road I braked to a halt to 'Give Way'. My car basically just stopped (bear in mind I'm not in gear at this point). Hmm.... turn the key and it starts, then stops again.

Start it AGAIN... and manage to keep it running in the queue for the lights with revs around 2-3k. Having made it through the lights I pulled over, and revved the engine some more - a little juddery just over 4k, and below 1.5k revs the engine just wouldn't stay 'on'. There were a couple of possible sounds from the exhaust/engine (hard to tell when you're in a Bus Stop at the side of a busy dual carriageway.

Anyway, I gave it a good sustained revving to around 4.5k (running pretty darned rough) and there was a definite noise out of the exhaust, at which point the engine seemed to have 'cleared its throat' and was happy idling again. Sat there for a further few minutes to make sure everything was in order, and moved off.... problem gone.

My question is, what might the cause have been? At first I was thinking maybe DME contacts, then when it started working again within a couple of minutes I was wondering if the AFM may have become stuck while I was at high revs back in paragraph 1. Or could it be something else like the Throttle Position Detector Switch Thingy?

Any advice gratefully received!

Hi Dan,
Check the pressure in the fuel rail, if one of the regulators is acting up, pressure goes up and tends to flood no4 cylinder causing rough running.
If one regulator is on the way out, it may be intermittent.

Dan, I had something similar on my S2 the other week and when plugged into the computer (at the specialist when I got home) it showed everything was fine but I'd had an Air Flow Sensor fault.

May be a pointer but it may be worth chatting to your friendly specialist and see if he'll plug it in and see what shows?

Word of warning, I changed my airflow meter, THEN found out it was fuel rail pressure, could have saved ££££`s if I`d gone for the little things first.
regards.
Jr.

Thanks for the feedback chaps. Have been away for a few days but will probably investigate further at the weekend.
