Airbag System Failure - following removal and refit of front bumper

hi all,

grateful for for your help please regarding what to check/sort as I now have the warning on my dash saying "airbag system failure"?

never had a problem with this before, but today I removed the front bumper to fit some radiator grill meshes and clean out all the leaves etc and upon reassembly I get this message! I guess I've dislodged something sensor wise and I think around the right (off side) headlight or inner wheel arch?

For info i couldn't get the left front headlight off so removed the bumper with that fitted still, hence why I didn't really fiddle in that area.

many thanks,

Mike

The airbag warning can be reset via the diagnostic tool by your specialist or main dealer, it's normal for airbag failure to appear every time the bumper is removed.

I removed the PU of my 997 many times, but never had an airbag failure warning. There are several multi-plug electrical connections on either side including 2 beneath each wheel arch liner. These need to be disconnected when removing the PU and of course need to be reconnected correctly when reassembling. Also, check none of the pins and sockets within the connectors have become damaged - the headlight connector is particularly vulnerable. Thanks for the info, although I'm still confused (easily done!) as both posts/answers differ!

I can't see that by removing the obvious wing repeater lights, the main harness for the PU (behind the right wheel liner) and the right front headlight I would have dislodged or generated an airbag sensor issue?

All lights and other electrics work correctly...

can I get your views and experiences regarding if I get the code reset, is this likely to come back on again? Bearing in mind normally a warning light means something is wrong, surely it shouldn't be "reset and forget"!

Nor can I, but the can bus electrical system often throws up weird effects. If your problem arises solely from the action of the PU removal, chances are it's electrical or, of course, the fault might be entirely unrelated. If you can't trace it, I would suggest you take the vehicle to your nearest PC and ask them to analyse the fault.
Regards,

Clive
