Went to the Anglia Car Auctions yesterday.......

Lot 46 Baltic Blue 1988 Lux

Original paint in good overall condition, original sills and stone guard stickers present.
Clean Linen pinstripe half cloth interior, cloth disintegrating on driver and rear seats, vinyl split on drivers seat.
Manual transmission, teledials in fair condition.
Looked in 'as used' condition.
127K miles, 1 owner, service history, 10 months MoT.
Sold for £3500

Tidy looking body, very recent looking respray to an acceptable but not top notch standard. Painted over stone guards, lazy masking in places, original looking sills,
Very clean interior in burgundy pinstripe with Sport front seats with one split in drivers bolster.
Manual transmission, sunroof, teledials and rare cruise control.
Looked like it'd been tidied up to sell.

That's quite a punt for a car with just 2 months MoT.
 
The blue 88 car sounded better from the OP's description, sounds like the bids were wrongly influenced by mileage.
 
Trouble is, first impressions count. and the '86 certainly had more wow factor, although it could well be inferior under the skin..... Of course it could be that white 944s are just soooooo much more desirable. [;)]
 
Strange. The estimate was £3.5 - £4.5K so the vendor must have nicked it. I would assume £3.5 K was the reserve. Taking off the £70 entry fee and 5% + VAT commission he would have trousered £4066.
