Well this only took about a year to get done!
Finally replaced every bit in stainless steel (manifold, cats, mufflers) but for the sake of economy reused the tailpipes!
Getting the bits together took a bit of time and patience, and mixing and matching - considerable headscratching and angst was experienced as I took the plunge on each part.
The easy decision was the Dansk Mufflers at £635 inc fitting kit (very competitive) from 9 Apart in Bolton (thansk to Ben there) www.9apart.co.uk/
The manifolds were the leap of faith, imported form Germany, ordered via ebay; but absolutely nothing wrong with the quality - a sterling buy as it turned out - £185 including gaskets and and shipping www.gm-carsolution.de
The Catalysts involved much research and sleepless nights - in the end the DesignTek High flow (200 Cell) catalysts from Design911 were decided on - My thanks to Martin there - another £715.
So once I had all the parts, KwikFit just weren't going to be up to the mark for fitting - and its this last aspect, when you have an older car like mine (1998) with a 17 year old exhaust on it that gets tricky. My usual indy Porsche specialist decline to take on the job (and they will normally do anything) because it is a pig to get the manifolds off - and off course they were in my case the most dodgy part - literally hanging on by slivers of metal around the studs and nuts, which were all corroded on horribly.
Enter the considerable black art exhaust skills of Mr Pete Toulmin of Toulimin Motors in Windsor www.toulminmotors.co.uk
The day I took it in, I parked in the waiting line next to 2 Ferraris includng a 308GTS and a Testarossa - rather better company than I usually keep.
I left the car with him and as expected got a call after a few hour saying the manifold studs had sheared 11 out 12 during dismantling and the studs were corroded and embedded too tightly to remove. A specialist drilling rig was used to drill out all the errant studs, re-tap the head (still on the car) and then new studs etc fitted - not a job I would have wanted anybody except a real professional to attempt.
So now the new exhaust system is on its simply epic - sounds better (but not overwhelming as its for everyday use), goes better, and may well have sorted out a niggling warm start problem that has plagued the car since I got it Dec 2013.
All in all I have gone through a couple of grand, which isn't too brutal given the scale of the job, but the performance increase and the responsiveness is very noteable. No remap has been required, but the power and torque is definitely up.
Happy? Just a bit.....!
Now all I've got to do is save up for that suspension re-build....ho hum...holiday next year kids (promise...ish).
