Wiper Linkage Removal / Replacement

A quick, hopefully simple, question.

The short link from the wiper crank to the driver's side wiper keeps falling off the ball joint on the wiper shaft because the plastic socket is worn. I bought a replacement arm.

Do I need to remove the wiper assembly from the bulkhead to fit the new linkage (including also the vent fans and housing) or can I just lever the new linkage onto the ball joints with everything insitu? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks for the response, just wanted the confidence to go at it, I was afraid something would bend or break.
 
I found I couldn't change mine with everything in situ and ended up removing the wiper motor to effect the changing of the linkage. Then I found that even with a new link bar, it still fell off the ball socket. My solution was to drill a 3mm hole straight through the middle of the ball and use a split pin and a couple of washers to hold the link bar onto the ball socket.
 
it is possible, you just have to make sure its square when you try to push it on, and if the ball is worn there is no way to replace it as M3 has found out

if your going to remove it all you have to remove the top of the heater box to have the space, the biggy wit this is the two 22mm nuts on the wiper shafts, if the alloy part is very corroded they will snap as you try to undo them, voice of experience
 
I have completed this repair so thought I would share in case its useful to anyone.

I tried for 30 minutes or so to lever the replacement link onto the ball joints but gave up in the end and decided to remove the fan housing and rotor to allow the wiper assembly to be removed.

Got to say this was a pain mainly because the fan cowl screws against the bulkhead have to be removed and reinserted blind, a good proportion were also seized so much swearing and frustration but got there in the end. The wiper mechanism is also tricky to remove and refit even with the fan cowl and rotor removed.

It took me around 4 hours from start to finish (twice my estimate!) but the good news is that both wipers move so all looks good.......... I also removed an incredible amount of leaf debris from behind the fan housing so worth doing for that reason alone.

Incidentally there's a German YouTube video which shows all of this albeit for a LHD car so not identical but a reasonable guide.




 
I did just the same on a 968 (not mine) on Tuesday not a link bar issue but a siezed spindle

I'm impressed doing the job in an hour Waylander! I expect I would get faster next time but hoping I don't have to find out, its enough **** to do these jobs once. I'm hoping one day to actually drive my car for more than a few days without something going wrong.
