[attachment=instrument bulb.JPG] can anyone please tell me the wattage and ID /type of bulb used in the centre console ash tray or give me a link to somewhere I can purchase some please.
it looks to be a push in capless wedge type about 4.5mm diameter similar to the one in the image.
Are they 1.5W 3W or 5W ??

anyone ? I'm losing the will to live here going through endless pages of bulbs on ebay groan......
Clarkes recommend a 12v 3.3W bulb type 194 ? is that correct.
Oh and the image upload insert/attach /edit process seems to be a bit buggy

youre in luck !!
just purchased some today lucas llb286 12v 1.2w capless
cheaper to get them via ebay or amazon
Dave

Resilvering the prisms will also improve binnacle lighting no end. You can replace them with LED also and change the colour. I havr blue.

I've just been there, I've replaced all my dash lights with LED's there a really good write up explaining, polarity, how many to order too,

http://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/843713-late-944-dash-leds-a-reference-post.html

It takes a bit of patience I took my time checking each led for polarity and marking each one for working before and then once fitted in the dash with a PP3C battery and wires with pins to ensure each LED bulb contact was picking up the connect from the PCB track.
If you do go down this path also ensure this .....open up the led contacts to the correct gap otherwise your at risk breaking the LED fitting or worse still the dash connector hence my method with the PP3C and pins powering the LED from the PCB track.

thank you Dave and all
. I didn't get a email notification of the replies for some reason ?
I was reading on the Clarkes site that 3.3W is recommended but no higher due to the heat.
I suppose with the rheostat you could always reduce the output and keep a little in reserve for when you need the dash brighter.
cheers Dave

Yes thanks Rob I read that on Clarkes also. I'm definitely going to do that once I've got the dial cluster out . Its going to be like the inside of the tardis.
The bulbs I'm trying to source are the tiny wedge bulbs for the ash tray and behind the heater grille which might be different from the bulbs that have a large plastic screw holder for the guages

Peanut, the bulbs that Clarks recommends are for the 3 main bulbs that illuminate the speedo and tacho, they are 194 bulbs of 3.8W that you can find on Ebay but are expensive. Read my write-up, it covers binnacle removal as well as resilvering and replacing the main bulbs. I've had LED's as main bulbs, I also discovered heat damage due to someone installing 5W bulbs, I've reverted to 3W bulbs which, after re-silvering the reflectors, i find more than adequate - with the advantage over LED's that the dimmer still works!! Do NOT buy tha Autoatlanta repair kit, it's a rip-off especially for UK buyers due to shipping and import charges - £50 for 3 bulbs, 3 pieces of silvered plastic and 3 pieces of black sticky tape plus incorrect instructions (they suggest cleaning the old solvering off with acetone, which is a no-no_) is really extracting the urine. You can buy 3W wedge bulbs at less than £3 for 10 delivered, black electricians tape is cheap, as is shiny foil and acetone-free nail varnish remover and make-up removal pads (borrowed from wife's dressing table!!).

Thank you Chris .
family down for the week so first chance tonight to check and read through your excellent tutorial.I will definitely refurb the binnacle lighting whilst I have half the dash off. I've not been able to see any of my guages at night time for years as the instrument light dimmer switch fell off into the dash and I couldn't reach it. Now the fascia is off i'll try to glue the switch back in place as the plastic locking lugs appear to be broken .

Thanks to Dave I now know the bulb ID for the ashtray bulb so i'll order a couple up. I can look for generic bulbs as I'm sure lots of German cars used them at the time.

Halfords do them as well 286 capless, I have 286 capless LEDS in my ashtray, and the heater controls, and the headlamp switch.

501 Leds With Canbus so they still dim in the dash

Mine were canbus LED's - have to be as I also use them in the MB rear lights. However, they did not dim. The ones in the Rennlist thread do, according to the author, but getting them from USA might be costly!

Edit - I just went to the superbrightleds website, the bulbs (main dashboard illumination) are $3.49 each, but cheapest shipping method offered is $17.50, so 3 bulbs would be $28 (over £20!!) delivered.

Thanks possibly to the damaged silvering, the LED's did not give enough light. I decided to try original 3W normal bulbs, was happy with the result and did not fancy pulling the dash out again! I tried to test before replacing the dashboard trim, but even a dark-ish garage and a towel over the steering wheel and me didn't work adequately, so I put the dash back in and waited a few days for a night drive! I'm not overly bothered about dimming, but a friend (also a 968 owner) keeps his instrument lights at minimum as he dislikes bright instrument lights!

Was in the local car spares shop today to get some bulbs for the rear lights, and noticed they had emergency wing mirror glass, which is infact thick sticky mirror film that you cut to shape and stick over your smashed glass, and that would be just great for the cluster reflectors £3.49 for enough to do 3 clusters, bargain
