Removing interior trim side panel

Has anyone experience in removing the side panel lining, interior trim beside the rear seat, see attachment. In the workshop manual the first step is to "pull cover -2- up and off -arrow-. I have applied reasonable upwards force by levering the cover, but am worried that I will break a tab. The replacing instruction is "position the locking tabs of the cover -2- on the side-panel lining -arrow- and press in", but shows a horizontal arrow.
