Replacement buttons

Hi folks, just joined up after buying a 997.1 4S Manual. Seems to drive very nicely.

The car has a few minor issues (I say this - its due a major service tomorrow so this might change).

Up first is some cosmetics.

Firstly, I need to find a SIM Tray cover button. I have the tray, it works, etc. But the front of it, where it says SIM, has fallen off. Does anyone know where I can source one, or has one going to the bin after replacing the whole tray?

Secondly, the Fan and Temp control rocker switches. I see from the internet that you can replace these; does anyone know where to source them?

I'm sure there will be many more help requests but I'll start with the easy ones - although I suspect these are harder than I can possibly imagine!

Cheers,

Richard

Did you try Porsche?
I ordered two buttons for my Gen2 £54 including the 10percent PCGB discount. Pricey... but for the PCM3 I couldn't find any alternative :-(

oh and welcome! :)
I love the 4s Rear!!

Thanks both. It hadn't occurred to me to ask Porsche - I assumed they would want to replace the unit or something.

Will ask tomorrow.

Cheers

Richard

Hi

If anyone has a set of worn switches i would be interested in purchasing them, I have purchased the black rubberised spray & can produce the stencils for the fan & Temp graphics, just need a set to trial

Regards

Karl

Hi Richard,

Just wondering how you got on with the climerepair option - if you went for it?

I'm in the same boat and my Gen 1 buttons have worn right off. I called the OPC (Hatfield) today and they would only sell the whole unit, they didn't have a part number for just the switches. Did you get the same story?

I'd like to give the new buttons a try, but presumably if the OPC is right, it's not an original part, so wanting to know if anyone has fitted the £100 ones.

Cheers
Peter

So Porsche will only sell me the complete A/C control unit, for several hundred pounds - forget the figure.

In the meantime I have taken a black marker pen and carefully filled in the white areas. Its far from prefect but until I work out what I'm going to do it's not noticeable until you look closely - and I mean, lean in for a look.

So, temporary fix. Likely I will get round to sending the unit away for new buttons at some stage.

I see US companies on youtube, one of the charge 145USD for refurb. Here is an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwMLaGKPnq4
If you were happy to take the button out yourself and spray them with matt black paint and then coat with a matt clear lacquer, that would be an excellent job. You would just need to work our the fan and volume symbols to stick on them.

Here's a video on how to take the buttons out: https://youtu.be/jfnGmjnc0_0
Here's a video of how to get them in again: https://youtu.be/LC9dGUOGoao

My ashtray area is a tiny bit rough and I am seriously considering respraying the whole console...Ive noticed that its not even the same colour of black as the radio in my GenII anyway! I will price it from Porsche first but if I get it from them I wonder should I spray a clear coat over the whole thing anyway as extra protection.

Above is a poor photo of my repair I removed the buttons as per the You tube video, removed the remaining old paint and used 4mm vinyl transfers from Amazo, there was no fan symbol so I spelt out the FAN. Then sprayed with adhesion promoter and 3 or 4 light coats of satin black plastic paint and after 24 hrs removed the stickers. Some of the edges have small bits of residue which will brush off easily when fully hardened. I pleased with the result and only cost a few pennies to do and about 2 hrs. Hope the helps.

Hi
i too have this problem with my 54 plate only covering 9,000 miles, the car is still under Porsche warranty
Would this not be covered as surely it cannot be classed as fair wear and tear
