991.1 Tyre Options

I am relatively new to Porsche and am absolutely loving my 991.1 C2S. Tyre replacement is approaching and am I correct in thinking the only N rated options for 245/35/20 And 295/30/20 are Pirelli P Zero? Whilst I have no real issues with these I always like to look at all options before replacing. The car does display a lot of the reverse judder which doesnt concern me but if anything else is available i would be interested to hear your experiences. Your advice and comments would be much appreciated.

MICHELIN PILOT SPORT4 S TYRE is a new product, available in those sizes and would probably be my tyre of choice for performance and wet weather conditions. However, I'm not sure if they are currently N rated. Worth looking into though.

Clive

I am just switching to Michelin as the Pirellis have not served me well over the past four years and can confirm that the Michelins are N rated. At the moment I have only switched the rears but they do feel better for my style of driving and the fronts will follow once the summer tyres go back on, I currently use Pirelli Soto Zeros in the winter. The tyre judder in cold weather disappears with winter tyres!!

As far as I am concerned Pirelli P Zero are poor performers but I was forced to renew them again for my 991Turbo S (245/35 ZR20 (91Y) and 305/30 ZR20 (97V) They lasted 6000 miles with 3 or 4 track days and around 4000 road miles per year. Just about to replace them again after another 6500 miles.

My 997 Turbo had the same experience but I was able to replace Pirelli with Bridgestones which ran 17000 mile with the same pattern of driving.
Purists may say that the Bridgestones don't handle so well but thanks to the FWD and associated electric safety features I never felt anywhere near the edge. They were not available in the right size for my 991 Turbo.

I have no experience with Michelin Cup but a friend with a 991 GT3 fitted with them says they are really good but they only do around 4000 miles of mixed driving but he uses the car less on the road than I do.

I will look to review my options on changing too. I'm currently on Michelin Alpin winter tyres and as "salisbees" states you don't get the scrubbing due to softer tyre compound.

My summer tyres are Pirelli N Zeros

Stupid question I assume if you fit non '"N' rates tyres there are no implications on warranty in any way or your car insurance??

Thanks
Steve

If the tyres are non N on the car at the time the OPC does its 111 check it will fail and they will not give a Porsche warranty. My car bought and serviced regularly by the OPC that I had been dealing with for at least 25 years failed its 111 check just on the hard-wired dashcam that they had approved 2 years earlier. I got a warranty from elsewhere which was better value for money and gave longer cover. It is likely that I will never use my local OPC ever again !

Currently sat in the OPC waiting for my car and have been discussing tyres. They have to be N rated for warranty and all N ratings must be the same on all 4 wheels.

It is true Porsche Cars recommend N rated tyres for their vehicles and, if fitted, they should be from the same manufacturer and have the same N rating all round. It is not true that fitting non N-rated tyres is either illegal or invalidates insurance. Provided they road legal, they are acceptable. Non N-rated tyres are also be OK during the first 2 years of the manufacture's warranty.

The difficulty comes once you are into extended warranty period as this is a contract with third party insurers and requires the vehicle to pass a PC provided 111 point inspection. It will not pass if the fitted tyres are non N-rated.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Clive

Can I hijack this thread and ask if anyone is being daft like me and considering the "Pirelli Colours" P-Zeros that they make for the 991?
