I think you should consider however one of the main differences that of 2wd v 4wd. The purist would go for 2wd, but then again for air cooled too so takes you back to Johns suggestion of a 993
If you thinking of a 997 s - go for a gen 2 car, a huge difference in response and handling, I had gen 1 and testing a gen 2 cost me £££££ but have no inclination to sell it on, however it may challenge you on the budget
cheers Darren

The first three are all narrow body - sensible miles and arround your budget.
The last one you would have to get a bit more pocket money together for - well worth saving for IMHO the S are the best lookers[]
A 997 would not be my choice. I could see why a 996 turbo may appeal but for the best in my book just has to be 993!
Take a look/drive and you may want to get the old one - at current rates you will not suffer the depreciation that some of the others on your list will[]
Enjoy the search its the first part of ownership.
Re the `Gen11, it is out of my budget im afraid. Could stretch to £30k, but thats enough for a 'garage toy'
I can understand about the 997 being a nicer car to drive and i would indeed expect this as its a new generation car over the 996, but my guts are telling me BEWARE of the 997 engine problems which i have read about on many forums...there are plenty of them too. Seems a car that has done quite a few miles 50k plus almost seems to be safe, virtually all of the engine failures seem to be on lower mileage cars.
maybe someone can give me feedback on this?

Have you got a beard, the 993 could be the answer, can you afford the running costs?? just take a look at the service costs against the newer models..
Granted the 993 is a pretty model but;
The 996 Turbo is a bargain supercar and I know a few friends who have them, the Turbo torque is addictive...[8D]
The interior of the 997 is a sea change from the interior of the 996 and I feel the ride and handling were much improved, however it depends what you want from the car, if its about power then the 996 is the way to go and enjoy that boost, for divine looks both in and out with sublime handling then the 997 is the answer.... with the budget then the 997 ticks the boxes you didn't know you needed []
Quite rare for someone to say the the 6 is prettier than the 7 [&:] but its fair and each to their own.
I also prefer the wide bodies, but many don't.
Concerning the engine issues, the internet has blown it out of all proportion and as always, many more enjoy their cars whilst others who sadly have indeed had issues jump to the keyboards..
I get the phone calls asking about the issues and the majority are early cars that have not seen a dealer or service for a fair while- make your on call on that, I've had 2 this year.

Certainly a lot of blues with the main one being Ocean Blue closely followed by Midnight blue, then the quite rare Iris Blue, another blue I did not care much for was the Zenith Blue. But then they make them in all different colours so we can have our choice. Also see:-

Suggest you take a look and drive the 993 before writing it off (after all your in the driving seat, you have the money and time is on your side)
Enjoy the search

Cheers John, just not sold on the 993 really.
But have you tried driving one...[]

They made the 911 in all different shapes (well not that many changes - ie engine in the back two lights four wheels etc) so we could have a choice of model and colour ) My suggestions in my post above was just to make the most of your time and money and buy something that you really liked.
I know my 993 S still makes the hair on my neck (not beard as Gary W said in a previous post) stand up even when I open the garage door. []
Good luck at the Cambridge PC tomorrow and say hello to Gary Sorrell from me.
