16" tyres?

Hello!

We have beautiful brand new tyres on our '55 which were fitted by the previous owner, but the car has not been used at all since they were fitted some years ago.
They look superb, they are Michelin Superconfort 'made in France 5.00-5.50 x 16.
BUT, they rub the arches, in fact the outer wheel arches, and in reverse clip the front edges of the front wings quite badly in a reasonable(not even full) lock, they also clip the rear on lock! A little too much to drive comfortably.
(I have a split vw beetle with Wesa Gelande 16" chunky military tyres that rub a little on full lock but are not such a problem, and quite ok to live with by comparison)

We think the Michelins are a little fat, and should probably be 5.00 x 16?

What is the absolute correct crossply 16" wheel tyre size for preA?
And what brands are available if we have to change our tyres?
What brands were supplied on the wheels when preA's were brand new ex the factory?

No, already too busy next year now, certainly 2009 though! already booked LeMansClassic08, and we are going to try to make Hedingham. The Beaulieu events were very good.

If you haven't sorted it out already I have 525 x 16 Avon Tourists on my cab.
Only rubs on full lock and the car runs nicely with them too. [:)]

Yes I am starting to gather that there is a slight rubbing issue with 16"s, is this why most people seem to swap for 15"s? Just for ease of driving? Personally I dont see any good reason for removing a car's proper wheels and substituting with 15"s!

I have since read in the car's small red covered handbook that the standard size is 5.00x16, but 5.25x16 was optional too. So I think we will try to live with ours and see how we get on, its just when they catch the wing in reverse lock it makes me wince!
I think your Avon Tourists are the best idea if we cant really bear ours [:D]

Yes that's me. I will certainly be at the International as well as at Heddingham.
The 16s are OK it just needs to be set up really well to drive properly. The cars are easier to set up on 15s and are more stable in cross winds, it depends on how fast you really want to go!
From the picture of your wheel, it looks like you might be leaking gear oil (or possibly brake fluid). The seal on the end of the drive shaft will probably need adjusting/replacing. Don't leave it and let oil drip on to the inside of your brake drum!
 
It is dry but an old leak on just this wheel which has stained the paint, but we have the brakes go over fully anyway as they are a bit weak, one small job on a long list!
Slow is good. I am 'mrs constant 55mph' (and always being told off for it by men!) But I do just love my old cars on crossplies! [:D]

 
You should definitely keep it on the 16" wheels with the crossplies then.
I think they look very classy on the early cars.
