1990 944 S2 - Looking for Original Stereo

Hi there,

I am a newbie and I trying to find an original Blaupunkt radio cassette for my S2. I'm not sure if the original stereo would have been Panasonic or Blaukpunkt ? Apart from Ebay does anyone have any ideas ? I would ideally like to get the Blaukpunkt Symphony if possible ? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

Lennox

You could try Autoatlanta?! It'll cost more than a pretty penny though if they can get one!! [;)]

Try: http://www.autoatlanta.com

'Twould have been a Panasonic. I have the original radio from my S2 ('89 model, so it may be different); although the car was 17 years old when I bought it, it got passed between the previous 3 owners and on to me, along with the (vast) history file.

My 1990 S2 is fitted with the original Digital Control Receiver Cassette Player. Model No CQ-F35FNP

How about this?:

Saw it and thought of you! [:D]

[:D]hi Tom, you're a top man ! Yesterday I found an A1 condition Panasonic CQ-F30E on eBay and bought it so very happy !!! My S2 goes in for a £6k mile service tomorrow. I'm sure I'll need a stiff drink when I get the bill !!! The joys of a 944 which I would not change for the world [;)] thanks again Tom. Len.

I doubt my car would agree, I was looking because I typed in the words "944 cassette" into ebay having slung my laptop across my car this morning where it met head on with the centre console cassette storage box and knocked it clean off the ageing hinge! Normally I don't miss the passenger seat! [:(]

6k?! Surely not?! Can't imagine your service bills will be as bad as mine were last year (belts, clutch and water pump all in the space of 2 months anyone?!)!

Good luck with the retro tape deck, hope it doesn't chew up too many classic recordings!

I like listening to tapes in my 1990 turbo, one of my Queen tapes has actually warped,i didnt even know tapes warped,it still plays though[:D]
I love the Hiss of a tape,my kids look at it in wonder like its out of the Ark,only one album on a massive tape... and all the FF/RW.. prehistoric but cool[:D]

All 1989 and 1990 cars Ive seen have had this Panasonic player. Ive got an original unit from a 1990 car that I owned years and years ago, and a manual from my 1989 cars previous owner. Unfortunately I dont have the mounting cradle, although a member here kindly offered me his - if only I could remember who it was.....

Mine still has a Pulp tape in it, from 1994!

Tom, poor you !!! last year must have been beans on toast for a couple of months when those bills came in ! My garage will no doubt call me with the tomorrow with their bill and ruin my day !!! If you cannot repair your cassette holder, I too have seen a few of these on Ebay and auto atlanta etc. There must be a network of independent specialists that we can all tap into and benefit from the economies of scale ? Maybe wishful thinking on my part ?? Anyhow the stereo arrived today , a Panasonic CQ-F30EE. All boxed up an unused - what a result - well happy as I'm a child of the early 70's and love all the nostalgia tape cassettes included . Just need to get hold of a manual now ???

Moving on to another topical issue, maintenance and the dreaded rust ! How are you all dealing with this and maintaining your prized classics ? I'd like to hear your stories and wonder if collectively we can all help each other ?

ORIGINAL: Northern924

Yep UK version would have had a Panasonic, German ones had Blaupunkt

Just for info the US cars had Blaupunkt Charleston SQR-26 fitted in 87-88...

I have one for mine to keep the originality police at bay [:D]

thanks for the post and good on you for keeping
Your spec original ! [:D] the blaupunkt system is a nice bit of kit. I particularly liked to look of the Symphony RDS model but trying to get hold of one of those I imagine is rare like hens teeth !!!!!

Ah, that explains it. I've had 944s from 1988 and 1991 and they both had Blaupunkt units. The S2 has a Symphony with matching Blaupunkt graphic equaliser below it. Very 80's.

Good luck with the cassette deck, the original panasonic in my car ate tapes, picked up the engine through the radio and generally sounded like crap. [:D] after a few weeks of nostalgia I bought a sony unit. I'll check if the manual for the panasonic is still around I think I may have chucked it, this was the deck I had;

for rust, i've used dynax s-50 in the sills, a bit of paintwork round the tail... trying not to drive it in the rain (too much, i'm in scotland after all) and check the drains are clear every few months - sunroof, fuel filler, sill drains. Also keep an eye on the inside of the sills with a mobile phone camera through the door frame ventilation hole.
