1990 944 "s3" vs 1986 951 turbo. And the 951 it is, now dynoed. Post #: 28

Another US car... or at least US rear bumper... I think you need to buy them all.. [:D]
 
US style rear bumper was available in some european countries (Finland & Sweden,Spain) for tax reasons. Additional safety lowered taxes a bit. I have seen impact rear bumper also installed on some originally German sold cars. That white car with clear side markers is also a 951 located here in Finland. It belongs to my friend Tommy. We converted original amber/red markers to clear ones, i suppose we did it back in 2005 (time flies). I bought those lenses from Sweden. Tommy's car was originally sold in US east coast back in 1990. It is model year 1989 car. Tommy has own it over 10-years. What comes to Nico's choice from vechiles available; i would take Turbo. It has been easy to see, that value of 951's is rising rapidly (at least in Germany and also here in Finland).
 
My little introduction to porsche received its grand finali today as I went to test drive the 951 today. I had called the rather large dealership earlier in the day to verify my entrance to the scene. This turned out to be good as the car was seemingly parked in the farmost corner and numerous cars needed to be moved to get it out. In fact I arrived just in time to see it being driven out of storage. I usually don't like stealership and prefer to buy from private enthusiasts. But this was an exception. The car was in as good and very clean condition. The paint has obviously been renovated and has a nice thick layer of polish on it. After the usual driving lisense paperwork I was off to find some smaller roads. It didn't take many minutes, or even seconds to realise tha this was a completely different animal to the NA cars. As somehow expected nothing much happens before 3k but then it certainly does. I have little doubt that most of the 260-270 ponies that the previous owner guestimated where still in the stalls. Wow. My very healthy ex 400hp m5 e39 would have little chance once this kettle is on the boil. The suspension was thankfully up to the job which is fully adjustable for camber and caster. The spiked tall winter tyres had a hard time and some shimmying was probaly due to them. The brakes has drilled good disc but still needed a bit more effort than the s2's. I was also pleasantly surprised that the exterior paint itself wasn't all that bad. The bonnet does need respray though. But like i said I'm not too bothered with that. It wasn't long before I got that feeling, "YUP, this is the one!". The brutality of the beast is addictive, it will be much more difficult to drive fast on a track than the NA cars, but I hope ultimately it will be more rewarding though the s2 is a more balanced package alltogether. It was passed closing time when I got back to the dealersip but that didn't seem to bother the salesman as he probably enjoyed the look on my face. Went to see the fuchs in the storage which were as mint as the phonedials and had nearly fully threaded summer tyres on them. There were a couple of boxes of spare parts and a map full of records and receipts which I only had the time to glance through quickly. All the keys were there too.. They had previously agreed on my offer and will even MOT it aswell as through in a new radio as thats the only thing along with the digital clock that didn't work. So I'll pick her up hopefully by the end of the week if the MOT is ok, if not then they'll cover any repairs. Can't really ask for more me thinks... Congrats for the purchase, sounds like you chose the right car for your needs. Heated Sports seats are a nice extra and usually rare. Let us know how you get on with it and wish you many happy miles with it [:)]
 
Jup. The car is in my workshop now. Turns out its a preproduction model with a vin numer of 00009 which according to Olli is pretty rare and if retuned to original ( in this case suspension ) would be worth quite a bit more than a production model..[;)]

Dynoed the 951 today. Seems like its ok given it has a vitesse chips and fuel pressure raised to 3.0bar. There is a boost pressure regulater but I want to upgrade the afr meter which is installed to a proper wide band lambda version as its now just a normal one and tells next to nothing.

The second pull was already lower so heatsoak was already taking its toll, but i guess i can be happy with the results.
 
If those figures are at the wheels then you should be very happy as they're commensurate with what mine is putting out, if that's flywheel numbers then something doesn't add up. Flywheel:

Mine are ehp. So you are saying that you got those figures by simply a chip, fpr and 3" exhaust? I don't think so...
 
Promax chips, 3 bar FPR, MBC set to 18psi and a Lindsey dual port Wastegate got me to 308bhp and 313ftlbs of torque. The dyno charts from last week are with an Apexi electronic boost controller instead of the MBC, 55lb injectors and a new exhaust. I wasn't expecting more peak power but there is a lot more "area under the curve" and consistent boost/AFR values. If you've got all the other bits in place then check when the head gasket was done and then turn the boost up to 18psi.
 
You two have different turbine housings though. The #6 explains the big torque fall on the '86 car, while the curve is slightly better on the '88 S.
 
Yes its a 86 model, the fuchs wheels should have given that away. The headgasket has been changed not so long ago. 18psi which is 1.2bar seems an awfull lot. I'll go half way and see what the improvements are.
