Hey Guys,

Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi to the 944 crowd,

So I sold my beloved 997 C2S on Thursday, a dealer came and collected it from my house, he paid a very good price and the whole process was fantastic, i spent a good hour with Dave the guy who came to pick the car up and he was really polite and very knowledgeable.

The car was in mint condition and i was very sad to see it go, i really didn't think i would be as emotional, I fell in love with Porsche when i was a young lad of around 15 and 2 years ago was finally able to buy one. I got into the Porsche scene when i started a new job and met David we began to visit events around 8 months ago and i think thats when i really got the bug, David had it bad when i met him - http://type993.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/festival-of-porsche-at-brands-hatch.html We Joined PCGB at this years Brands Hatch event.

So how to fill the Porsche shaped hole on my drive, I've had my eye on a Guards Red 944 S2 year 91, I had been trawling the sites and decided to view a car with a substantial service history, it had 144k on the clock but as i was told it had a file 2 inch thick so that didn't bother me, the car looked mint inside and out. I had planned the viewing for Friday, it was an hours drive from me in the Surrey area.

I asked David (the guy collecting my 997) to look at the details and give me his opinion, he seemed to think it was really worth it.

I headed up to see the car in convoy with my buddy in his 993 (any excuse for a drive) but halfway there was called and told the car wouldn't start, the guy selling it said this had happened before and he thought it was a fault with the fuel pump, conveniently he hadn't mentioned this before"¦"¦"¦"¦.. I continued up to see the car as i had a PPI booked in at Ray Northway's place and hoped we could get it down there.

When we got to the car it was a nice example, could do with a good scrub but it seemed like everything worked. We spend 20mins with the car and called Ray to see if he could help get it towed or flat bed etc (20min journey). 5 mins on the phone and Ray had fault found the problem, the car was running and i was test driving it down to Northways.

This is one of the oldest cars I've ever driven and it was awesome, the power mid range felt great, i wasn't expecting as much power to be honest, i was hooked after 5 mins, i really fell in love with the car. One thing i wasn't happy with was the ride, it was really soft and rolled about a lot. But that can be sorted.

We left the car with Ray and he said he would call later that day with his findings, if i was happy with his findings, i was happy to buy the car.

It all checked out HPI wise. Judging by the file every recipte has been kept, the car had wanted for nothing and it showed. (either that or it was always going wrong haha)

The details i was presented with where,

Northway Porsche PPI report came in

1. Service due on time, last service in book @133915 on 04/02/2011
2. Brake fluid change due
3. Ashtray illumination inop -
4. Glove box retainer on left hand side missing
5. Cigar lighter inop
6. Coolant level low but no signs of leak
7. Engine oil level slightly over filled
8. Rear tyres slightly perished
9. Alternator and power steering belts slightly perished
10. Fuel pipes at rear have been replaced with rubber hoses
11. Front anti roll bar bushes slightly worn
12. Right hand front fog light lens cracked
13. Left hand side of roof lining hanging down slightly
14. Gearbox bearings noisy and diff seals weeping slightly
15. Non standard exhaust back box

Biggest job Gearbox, the bearings must have just gone as it was looked at in 2012, but i'm generally happy with that and was told it will be fine for a few years, it will just be noisy, a 944 of this age is going to need some work i figure and at least i know what that work is.
So i bought it, haggled the price and bought it, i picked it up yesterday at 9am, driving it home i pulled into a petrol station to fill up, i ended up locking myself in the car with the alarm going off for about 3 mins.......nightmare haha

Its already booked in for a serve at Northway's on the 19th Jan, to include

Brake fluid change due
Alternator and power steering belts slightly perished - CHANGE
Front anti roll bar bushes slightly worn - CHANGE
Fit Shocks
Poss change exhaust
Poss fit LSD if i can find one at the right price an din time, but i can wait for the right one.

I'm looking to fit some Shocks on the same date to stiffen up the handling, any advice here would be appreciated.
Also a sports exhaust, although the current box is advertised as a Dansk it sounds stock, i would like a bit more noise, make it sound like a sports car, any help appriciated?

It will be getting a full interior and exterior detailing over the christmas i will post up some fresh before and after pics when i get the chance.

And if anyone knows of a LSD AOS box for sale i could be interested.

All this aside I'm very happy, i put 150miles on the car yesterday just driving around with a BIG grin on my face, at this point in time i love this car more that the 997 thats just left, it looks stunning, the shape is awesome. This is my childhood dream car, who would have thought it. The plan is to buy another 997 (turbo) next year but the 994 is a keeper.

I'm moving home next year to a house with a double garage (thats the plan anyway) when that happened the 944 is going in for a full bare metal respray and full coachwork.

Big thanks to David who managed to get me squeezed into Rays place last min for a PPI, cheers buddy.

Thanks for reading. I'm off for a drive now, and will probably polish the car again haha
Jamie

OH almost forgot the reason the car wouldn't start, Here it is sitting on top of the file that came with the car, It was replaced at the same time the guys at Northways topped up the Coolant on Friday.

That looks a tidy example. I'm not a huge fan of the twin pipes but I read you might be changing it anyway.

The linen interior looks in very good condition.

I agree, the twin pipes don't work on this car, I'm looking to change the whole system if i can find the right one, if that starts to take too long then i will probably have to change the tips.

The linen is dirty but in perfect condition, i hope a full leather restore will bring it back to life.

I have two full stainless systems - one janspeed and one powerflow if your interested.

cheers

Hi and welcome to S2 world!

My S2 is the third 944 I've owned and they are just right in so many ways!

Looks very similar inside to mine, leather faced front seats, perforated centres, but yours looks better.

Talk to Elliott (he's well known here and recommended) about the exhaust, this is mine looks stock, but is stainless, slightly larger and louder -

Thanks Elliot, appreciated, what sort of price are those exhausts?

What sort of sound do they give? i appreciate thats a difficult question!!!!

cheers

Hi Mike,

Thanks

How loud is your exhaust? i'm finding it hard to know what to get, can't really try before you buy if you know what i mean, i'm a bit fussy!!!!

I was cleaning the interior today, its not got a mark on it, apart from the drivers seat, passenger seat is dirty but no marks or wear.

[:D] indeed....

I've been enjoying your restoration thread, must be so much fun. I would love to have your skill set, I would love to have the time too haha

I'm hoping to gain a bit of knowledge tinkering with the 944, the 997 never needed anything doing to it.

A 944 S2 and an Audi Q7.....

Nice combo![;)]

The exhaust is little louder than standard, but does have a bit more rasp! Unfortunately I don't know what make it is, only that it was built up by an exhaust specialists near Newcastle.

Its standard to after the middle box then the custom stainless.

Your interior is beautiful, no holes where carphones were fitted etc!

Clean the seats and feed the leather faces (sides, backs and rears will all be vinyl) and leave it as it is!

1989 cars didn't come with a sunroof bag, but the fixings are still there to stow it properly. It should be rolled up lengthways and secured by the straps trhough the buckle on the inside of the hatch locks.

Hi Jamie, and welcome to the 944, fold glad you stayed in the "family" but would never have thought in September you would have been changing that lovely car!

The '44 is rewarding in many ways and looks like you have acquired a very nice well looked after car, hopefully see you at one of our "do's" in the new year.

Enjoy the '44 have a great Xmas, catch up again soon.

Another S2 convert - what more can I say!

Hello Jamie, that looks like a nice car and Northway are pretty comprehensive in their PPI's. Do you know whether that is the original numberplate? If so, someone on here will probably know it as the world of 944's is fairly small.

How much did you pay for it, if you don't mind me asking?

BTW, you mentioned that it had 144,000 miles on it but that doesn't bother you. It most certainly shouldn't; these cars were made to be used and, if well cared for, it should cope with another 144,000 miles without much trouble. There are a number of people on here with 944's that are heading towards 200,000 miles and yours should be no exception.

Welcome to the red S2 club! It does look like you have a lovely example that has had all the important jobs done. 144k miles is basically 'run in'. The big weakness in these engines is the cam chain and tensioner and yours has been replaced.

Lovely looking car (apart from the exhaust) IMO, miles are not an issue if looked after, a friend has an S2 with around 170k on it and it drives like 70k.
Enjoy It and look after it as good un's are getting hard to find.

Hey Oli,

Thanks, yes Northways are very good.

I believe that is the original plate, one record of plate change for a year from 2012, then back to the current plate.

I paid just over 5K for it.

I have noticed it takes a good few cranks before it fires up, and sounds like a bag of spanners for a few seconds, after that its perfect. Maybe i'm expecting too much from a 20year old car?

I've been reading the starter could do with a clean up??? just checked the battery and the condition check window isn't showing green so think it could need changing?? it was purchased and fitted in oct 2011 according to the file that came with the car, the car has been sitting unused for about 7 months. I'm not really good with this stuff, this car is my training ground.

Its booked in for a service on the 19th Jan, I'm tempted to fit a new box the bearing noise is driving me mad!

Hey Frenchy,

Agreed the exhaust tip doesn't look great, I've been looking at custom build exhausts today and they are expensive, I've been wondering if i can get the rear box inside's removed from the dansk system thats fitted to the car, and change the tip to an oval tip [:D]

Any idea how i would go about getting that done?

cheers
Jamie

Jamie,

£5k is a good price to pay for a decent S2, and yours looks like a nice one. It sounds like you weren't ripped off.

All 944's crank for a bit before they catch. (I actually didn't buy the first one I looked at as I didn't realise this, and didn't believe the seller when he told me that they all do that!) I am told it's due to the oil pressure needing to build up before they fire - I'm not sure whether the plugs don't spark for the first few seconds or something. Either way, this is very common. You can make them crank more briskly by taking the starter terminal lead off and cleaning it, as well as the engine earth lead and the battery terminal leads, but it will slow down again (almost imperceptibly) over time. A new battery will help a little, as well a new starter motor (which are very expensive), but if it starts reliably then I wouldn't sweat it too much. Fundamentally, three litres in four cylinders makes for a huge individual cylinder capacity which means there is a lot of force to make compression, so it will all be working quite hard.

For this reason, S2's are known to be hard on batteries. (This may encourage you to change the one you have!)

The other thing that they all do is make a lot of noise from the gearboxes! If you drive without the boot carpet then it will be a load worse .... The 944 gearbox is an Audi unit and as tough as old boots, don't let it bother you. (The 968, which is pretty much the same car, got a fancy-dancy 6-speed gearbox which was known to be quite delicate. This isn't a problem for a 944.) If it's really noisy then a change of gearbox oil will help. Some people swear by different brands (Swepco was all the rage on here a few years ago, but I haven't heard it mentioned for a long time) but any good-quality gearbox oil of the right grade will do you well, and change it every couple of years. This will improve the gear change action as well.

The other bit of good advice for any 944 is to drive it - a lot. They work much better if they are driven, and garage queens may look good but rarely drive as well as something that is given a good blast on a regular basis.

Enjoy it. The S2 is the thinking man's 944 and she should serve you very well indeed.

Oli.
