2.5 Boxster really worth it?

Hi all
Still without a porsche :( but i'm toying with the idea of getting a cheap summer roadster, i don't have a lot to spend so is there any reason not to go for a 2.5 to get the foot on the ladder?
It's either that or maybe a cheap MX5...
Yes i know a 2.7 or 3.2 is better but i'd like to keep running costs to a bare minimum

Also i was wondering regards to insurance, will the costs still be high if i only want to use it say 2000/3000 miles a year?

If you're up to doing a lot of work yourself (brakes, oil, coil packs, rads, etc.), baring major failures an old 2.5 might not cost much more to run than similar motors from other marques. But the M96 engine doesn't like being a garage queen.

I have had 2 Boxsters and 2 MX5's

The MX5 is the best value roadster on sale in UK.

The Boxster is the best, period.

The Boxster is by far the best drive, but an old Boxster will cost much more to run

But you will get a very good pre-owned 2.7 for the price of a new MX5.

Spyderman you say -

.

I have a 2.5 Boxster(love it) but it's not practical for everyday use. I work in and around Manchester and sometimes this can mean site visits to work on pc's and this can also mean dragging a pc back to the office. Not really enough space in the Porsche for this and also some places not so nice in Manchester. Also 60mile daily round trip. I digress slightly.

I want to use the Porsche, it's what it's for, so as they don't like being garage queens what is a ball park figure for usage? So many miles or once or twice a week? I have classic jap bikes and if i'm going to use them then it's a minimum of 30miles or an hour of use, gets things warmed and used.

cheers.

And in question as to being worth it, hell yes. Bloody good fun when you wind it up a little, sounds great, goes great on A Roads and looks great. More power? Always. But then i have motorbikes for that!

Thx for the replies
Will have to see, might be able to stretch to around 6k.. but just had a quote from Classic Line for around £340 a year limited to 3k a year..

Interesting - it looks like it's got the "S" grills in the front (titanium colour rather than black) - either someone cared enough to pay for them to be fitted, or it's had a new bumper at some time - might be worth having a good look at the front under the carpet in the boot etc to make sure it hasn't had a good sized frontal impact.

Could just be the picture quality .. But worth a look

But put your lovely GT3 next to my motor and ..............................
Derek, are you suggesting they should meet?
GTS not GT3 but still very able!

I have an old MX5 which I intend to sell soon I got it as I was working away from home and sometimes in places you wouldn't park anything nice but my best car is a Cayman S, I had a 986S before that and can say that the Boxster is far better than an MX5.

MX5's are cheap to run but for years I ran other Porsches on a budget doing most of the maintenance myself if someone wants the Porsche answer to a van fold the rear seats down in a 944 or 968. A pity the model wasn't continued in some respects.

Also, there are none franchised dealers and shops who do good work with lower hourly rates.

There are plenty of Cat D damaged/repaired cars around which will drop the price but you have to be careful as always. Cat D is usually not a serious write off but the insurers paid out and so the car needs a ticket from department of transport or something along those lines. An alignment check is a good thing in case any of the suspension was replaced also useful to prove the frame is straight.

No go i'm afraid... something didn't feel right with it.. for a 98 with 60K on the clock it looked pretty worn on the inside.. the steering wheel was just awful and the drivers bolster was very worn looks like more miles have been done than it suggests, body work looked ok.. it's probably had work done for stone chips etc, there was mold on the inside too.

Plus i could not get a limit raise on my CC anyway.. so that put an end to the idea for this one..

If only i could just hire one for a couple of months that would see me through the summer :)

Jeff

Shame. They should not be worn. Mine has done 60K miles and it looks pretty new inside.

One will come along - they are not exactly in short supply!

Sounds pretty rough, but there are others, at 60K the drivers seat may look creased on the bolsters but that's about it.

No wonder you've got a bad back VX220!

My son has one, just about dislocated my hip joints!

I think you were just unlucky with the one you picked to view. I got a 2001 'S' with 63k on the clock in pretty good condition all round for £7k

Will keep an eye open... seeing i can't extend the CC like i wanted to... it might have to wait for another year.. unless one lands in Sheffield i just can't say no to :)
