Hi guys i have a couple of questions about my car. Firstly the left hand side wingmirror, this has quite a focus on it and i just wondered if this was needed or if it should of been a flat there is no rubber along the mirror so i think it may have been replaced at some point. Secondly the car has a bit of a fast idle (around 1200rpm) for the first couple of minutes then it settles down. Is this due to the aftermarket airfilter that has been fitted and if it is, can the standard filter be used in the plastic shroud that is there.

Cheers

Chris

It sounds like someone has changed the mirror glass, and fitted the wrong one. I think the left mirror should be a plane one. They are easy to change - they just clip on - and not too expensive unless you have auto-dimming. I'll look up the correct part number and price tomorrow when I get to my PC. Not sure what you mean about the rubber part. Do you mean the plastic trim along the bottom edge of the mirror casing?

My Turbo did the same, and the tickover was about the same when it was cold. Mine being Tiptronic, I had to be a bit careful reversing out of the garage, and not let my foor off the brake too much. Like yours, it settled down after a couple of minutes. It should be 740rpm when hot, with AC off.

that sounds about right I just thought i'd ask. the rubber bit I meant is around the edge of the mirror. ill take a picture later and upload. it. I believe I have auto dimming as the rear view mirror and the drivers side wing mirror has a slight green tint but I'm not sure if its necessary.

Strange. I don't think the mirrors have a rubber surround - mine don't.

Yes, you have anti-dazzle door mirrors. The mirror on your LH door should be aspheric, and they are an arm and a leg (ÂŁ266.80+VAT). I think that is what you must have though. You can buy a plane anti-dazzle mirror (996.731.035.03) for ÂŁ128.64+VAT if it is an issue. (Plane, non anti-dazzle, are ÂŁ36!).

Might go for the 36 quid option then[:D]

Yes, I do on my driver side door. I think it is because they are auto dimming and there is a fluid contained behind the glass to facilitate this. My nearside mirror glass does not have the surround as it does not dim.

Hope this helps - for what it's worth both mirrors dim on my Lexus and they both have the black surround around the glass.

Just to hijack your thread. My car's door mirror heaters have packed up. Didn't know about it until Porsche Chester told me on my service report. Both mirrors. What does anybody reckon?

Thanks and sorry for the hijack

Best bet is to check the fuse first, and then unclip the mirror, and check you are getting 12v to the connections. If so, then the element(s) have gone. If not, you need to delve further.

Hi Richard

I've checked the fuse and its fine (rear screen heater works too) so I guess its time to check the mirrors, neither of which work. So, before I wade in, is there a technique to use to avoid breaking anything in the process of removal.

Thanks.

The mirror just unclips from the mounting. (Fig 2). You just need to get your fingers under the outer edge, be brave, and pull. You can see the connectors in the diagram, so check you are getting 12v to them with the HRW switched on.

I can confirm the mirror is an expensive autodimming one as mentioned above there is a plate of galss in front of the reflector it is seperated by an oil film the black rubber keeps it all together there is also aluminium tape around the edge

My Cayman has auto-dimming mirrors, and they don't have the rubber surround. That's why I thought it looked odd. Another one for the memory bank.

Maybe as your cayman is newer its been refined more? I keep thinking the seal around the outside is just to stop the green stuff leaking out the mirror [:D].

well Richard they used the spare parts bin for mine I am sure by MY07 they had refined things abitI remember looking at the mirror odly when I first got the car pushing the and cleaning the glass if only I had known how expensive they were [] ! still took it to pieces when it failed and tried unsuccessfully to remanufacture it at home thats why I know how they did it,it is quite impressive how good it is you notice with all those clowns and their badly adjusted bi-xenons

Hi richard im finally getting round to order a new mirror (I realise its been a while). Im looking at the aspherical mirror which i realise it mega expensive for a piece of glass. Whats the difference between 996 731 035 02 and 996 731 036 02? They are both aspherical and m271.

Cheers

Chris

According to PET:
035 02 is the left hand mirror, but I think it is for a LHD car, so driver's side.
036 02 is the right hand mirror for a RHD car
Both are M271, which is heated only (ie, not anti-dazzle M266).

To be honest, the latest PET is very confusing, and I can't work out what your car should have. I'm not altogether sure if the passenger side ones are supposed to be anti-dazzle, so I think it best that you ask your local Porsche Centre parts department, to be sure.
