Hmm apologies for ignorance...

what's a PSE?

moving to a 996 next week and probably will get porsche sports exhaust - these just replacements for stock item?

oh sh*t just realised - does pse stand for Porsche Sports Exhaust? looking at ebay more it seems these are what I'm after, but are they ok for 3.4's (2001 car)

The PSE is very desirable on the 996. It makes the engine note 'fruitier' and more purposeful, without being intrusive. OPCs charge c.£1200 for the PSE, plus c.£200 for fitting, although you may be able to negotiate some discount. An extra £400 will give you a switch to turn it on/off, but you are unlikely to need this.

TVR ...........

Someone who realises that £1400+ is taking the p**s for 2 exhaust boxes you can buy in quick fit for £100 !!

Regards

I guys...

Just thought I would say that I am getting a PSE fitted today, guy is coming to pick up my car in about 20 minutes..ummmmm Porsche Sports Exhaust....I have waited six months for this and it may cost me dearly when my wife founds out that I have just spent spent £1600 on an exhaust on a nearly brand new car that already has an exhaust....just for a bit of sexy noise...

:)

Apparently, it takes a couple of hundred miles to settle-in, but you won't be disappointed. It gives the 996 the sound you would expect from a £70k sports car, without being loud and aggressive.

But £1600? This is good value if you have the switch, but expensive if you don't. Have you negotiated a discount?

Hi there

I hope it will improve the '996' experience....I have heard lots in these discussion rooms about it, I'm really excited

I managed to negogiate a small discount with Porsche Swindon for the PSE with the Switch - £1646.96 (inc VAT) - Is that a good price you think?

Petch.

Petch,

Yes, that is a good price (if it includes fitting, switch and vat).

However, why do you need the switch? The default setting it always on. You would only need the switch if you were doing a track day at a 'quiet' circuit. Otherwise, there is no need to turn it off. Your right foot is the best switch.

Porsche Swindon fitted mine, without switch, for £1300ish, inc vat.

Hi Oliver

I opted for the switch as I just wanted the flexibility to turn it off, I live in a very small lane/village with a few cottages around and its usually quite quiet, and if I was to leave early in the morning, or I was coming back late at night, I didn't want to upset my neigbours by rattling through with a PSE. I was under the impression that it was quite noisey...

Do you think it is unnecessary then?

Petch

I wouldn't call it noisy. It can make a delicious sound under hard acceleration, but on small throttle openings it just sounds fruitier and more purposeful.

However, from a cold start, the ecu system is programmed to hold the engine at a slightly higher rpm for 60 seconds or so and, I suppose, this would be slightly louder without the switch. Thereafter the noise tends to be controlled by your choice of gears and throttle openings.

I wish i had spoken to you before...

Anyway, they are fitting now so not to worry. Just really looking forward to it, will be back with me tomorrow so I'll let you know what I think.

Having spoken to the delivery driver for my local OPC about PSE, he says it sounds fantastic, but after a while on the motorway it gets tiring and you cant hear yourself speak, so opting for the switch sounds like a good idea Petch. Enjoy

Rodney,

I disagree, there is no apparent mid-range drone at cruising speeds, although it could be a couple of db louder. I think more noise comes from the tyres, even Pirelli Rossos.

However, about 8 years ago, Lovetts at Swindon fitted a Sports Exhaust system to my, then, 993. Mark Scholes phoned me to say that all was done, but there was a slight mid- range resonance at c.70 mph in 6th. I went over, tried it and, yes, it was a tedious drone.
To their credit, Lovetts removed the system, refitted my old one and charged me nothing.

This time, I was much more careful to test the system first, so that it didn't spoil my enjoyment of Radio 4 or Schubert's piano quintet.

Hi Rodney, Oliver

Fogive me for not knowing what I am talking about when it comes to technical aspects of the PSE, but they (Porsche Swindon) offered to remove something on the exhaust that makes it quiet during 3-5rpm or something, maybe the droning noise comes from that being removed?

I imagine this feature was for cruising noise/comfort? Although I could be completely wrong :)

Only about 7 hours to go...

Petch

Petch,

Yes, that is a good price (if it includes fitting, switch and vat).

I really am just about to give up on this forum, If I havent responded to PSE questions a hundred times in order to help people.

Jasmin have them for £700 odd plus vat, so how on earth is £1600 good ???

ditto £90 per hour to fit it.

Some people with newer cars, still under warranty, will prefer to have everything done by their local OPC, despite the price premium.

However, others will be interested in PSE, but will be put off by the cost and, for them, a decent saving will be worth having. Jasmin should really quote a fully inclusive supply, fit & vat price so that the true saving is more obvious.

The 'switch' is a manual version of an automatic part of the PSE, designed to get the system through German TUV regulations. At 25'ish mph, the baffles close (that is, the PSE goes in to quiet mode), and reopen again at 40ish. This gets round the noise regulations (this idea was first used by Yamaha on its EXUP motorcycles 10 years or more ago). I guess, you can override this functionality, but if you do, and do not fit the switch, go and buy a much cheaper, always loud system from somewhere else!
Bear in mind that not everyone wants a loud exhaust (but I am not one of them), and so keeping it switchable will make it more attractive when you come to sell.

I like TISKPJ's idea, and I watch with interest.
