458 Italia v Turbo S report late May

Only a few weeks now until I get the new 458 for the Bank Holiday weekend and then will have two of the best supercars around today to play with comparing this with my turbo S.......getting excitied, so off to drive the GT3 for a bit as its dry and sunny.

I think you'll find the 458 is in a different league to the turbo S or GT3.

I passengered in a 458 a month ago on a drive across the Evo triangle (in the presence of Gen2 turbos, GT3s et al) it absolutely blew them to the weeds. Not in terms of outright speed (the turbo was faster with launch control) but the experience was sensational. The engine is right behind you screaming away, and on the overrun the exhaust is constantly burbling and popping. It has a beautiful interior, and a stunning exterior. Everyone on the roads wants to be behind it, everyone wants to take a picture of it, everyone wants a ride in it. The long line of Porsches behind it might as well have not existed. It was exhilarating and it made me smile and laugh. Getting back in my GT3 felt like sitting in a Trabant.

With a car like that it's not about performance (although it does very well in that regard) it's about the overall experience, which it covers exceptionally well -visual, aural, visceral.

Enjoy!

That's just as well given that you could have a Turbo S AND a GT3 for the same money![;)]

Ok, you can stop it now guys, I'm not normally the jealous type but this is getting too much [:(][;)]

Unless you have any pictures of the female support crew that go along with these cars ??? [:D]

Here here on the 458. Incomparable.

Hi Rodney, Long time no speak, been to Le Mans again since 2008?

Well it is not what you pay, it is what you lose! 458s are selling for over list. My 360 Spider sold for more than I paid for it. My last two 911s each lost 30% in a year and only 1500 miles. Much as I love Porsche, I'll not buy another 911 with that sort of depreciation. That will not change in the future as Porsche now intend to manufacture 200,000 cars per year. Yes, really!

If we are comparing apples with apples you must have bought your 360 new and sold it for more than you paid for it. Unlikely. Or did you buy your 911s new and bought the 360 used?
Try putting the same mileage on a 430 as a 911 and see who gets spanked the most (depreciation and running costs).

True I bought the 911s new and the 360/430 secondhand. However, 996s and 997s do not start to appreciate once they reach 5 years old. They continue to depreciate. Stands to reason that if you mass produce, cars will depreciate. [] Moreover, as I said, 458s (in fact all new Ferrraris) are appreciating. Also, you try and get a discount on a new Ferrari. Impossible, but I have recently been quoted a £10K discount on a new Porsche!

Don't get me wrong, Porsches are great cars, but I simply cannot afford to lose £30K every time I buy one!

We will see. Mind you, a GT3 RS will always hold value better than a C2S, but is hardly an everyday drive, whereas my 430 Spider is a more comfortable drive than my C2S Cab.

Better sound too [:D]

Hard to beat the Italian sound track. I thought the 458 sounded glorious when I went out in one. Gear change speed is hard to believe too. Might take one for a spin later this month as all this talk has whet my appetite.

Not sure I agree here with all said, my 430 and 360 both lost an amazing amount after 2 years of ownership, in fact the 430 depreciated £50k in 2 1/2 years, I have yet to have another supercar that loses that much, never mind the service costs. Cant say anything negative about the looks of the cars and the sound, but I reckon the GT3 RS is as useable if not more, wont lose £50K in 2 years and it costs me almost the same as my new 430, also on the run its sounds "almost as good".

I stopped buying Ferrari (I had a 458 on order) becasue I am an engineer at heart and love good engineering, if I was a dress designer I would have the Ferrari, to have both would be nice, but I just know I would use the Porsche more, now maybe a different story when I get my MC12....well see?

Well, £50K in 2.5 years is only 33%. I lost that in less than a year on my last 911. Moreover, the looks and sound of a red Ferrari Spider beats any 911 I have every had.

However, I make sure I only drive on a bus route. So I can get the bus home when it breaks down [:D]

Only joking.

Please don't Joke they do and always will break down, mine spent at least 7 "periods" times in the garage in 4K miles and if you compare miles per £ the Porsche is still a less depreciating item. IE: Put 10K miles on a new Ferrari and you will lose even more, thats why you get Ferrari's with 5K miles on them after 10 years, people are scared to use them. If only they realised that it makes for a better car with some miles.

You always lose the VAT in the first year, most people cant sell a >£35K car to Mr Public (people want warranty, finance, assurance), so the dealer wins, they need about 7-10K margin + and so its easy to see why 33% goes very quickly

Only one winner here the dealer! OR the person who keeps the car for 5 years or more and puts miles on it.

Well, as it has been said before, we are comparing apples with oranges; chalk & cheese. Or more likely the ever faithful & reliable Laura Ashley wife with the truculent, but passionate & sexy Italian mistress. Perhaps the answer is to have one of both [:D]

Yes you are quite correct, being married to an Italian, I get street cred when i own a Ferrari, yet respect when i own a Porsche....and what do most of them drive a "Ford"
