550 spyder Anniversary edition

Hi all,

I ordered the limited edition Boxster S in Hong Kong for onward shipping to Australia, I got the last one of 5 allocated for Hong Kong. Australia has 8 allocations but outrageous pricing in Australia put me off so i will import my own. Production of my car is in April, delivery in Hong Kong estimated for July 2004........i should get it into Oz sometime in September. What a truly wonderful car the Boxster is and this limited edition had me hooked when i saw it on the Porsche website - i placed a deposit even though i have never sat in a Boxster or seen one in the flesh. (China has only a fledgling market here and the Boxster S is not yet homologated here) but i will hop over to Hong Kong next month for a test drive in a Boxster S.

Western Australia has a Porsche club but it seems totally inactive and out of date so i have registered here - your forum is very interesting and active, i spent all this morning reading all the threads since November 2003! Well done to you all.

I am British but working as an expat in China, i used to be a Service Manager for Porsche distributor in Brunei before the Boxster was launched, now working for Mercedes again in China. I have a home in Australia where the roof down motoring is wonderful. I can't wait to drive my new baby.

I just wanted to introduce myself to you all and i hope i can contribute to your forum.

Best wishes from Shanghai

Terry

That's a bit of a kick in the parts for Mercedes, you buying a Boxster. Shouldn't you be having a SLK, or what ever the baby convertable is?

Welcome to the Club, I'm looking forward to reading your postings from around the globe [;)]

Hope you enjoy the anniversary model. I would love one myself if I could get hold of one and get the right finance deal.

[8D]Hi Terry ... I am sure you won't regret your purchase as the Boxster IMO is probably one of the finest cars Porsche ever produced! Read the 100's of road tests to date and the reviews are always raves even from non Porsche loving testers.

The car was bang on straight out of the box with no major or minor tickering really necessary right from day one.

I had previously owned 4 911's and never in my wildest dreams imagined owning anything else [;)] Now I say the same thing about the Boxster

Lets have some digi's when you get it home and first impressions after your HK test drive

Regards from London ...Robert

I have worked in the motor industry all my life since i was 15 years old - Merecedes-Benz for 10 years, Jaguar for 4 years, Porsche for 4 years and GM for 8 years and there is only one brand that i truly believe is the best of all, my decision to buy a Boxster without even sitting in one before is a testament to my confidence in the brand - I could of course buy a SLK 320 at employee rates and save thousands compared to the price of the Boxster - but one thing i learned from working with Porsche is that the product is first class and reliability is far superior to any other brand. After -sales service is for the most part excellent, but there are always some dealers who let down the product but that is true of all brands.

I still have many friends at the Porsche factory and i spent 3 weeks working in the "Exclusive department" in October 1994 and i helped to install the Fitchel & Sachs electronic automatic clutch to the 911 turbo's destined for the Sultan of Brunei - he ordered 10!

There are not many options offered with the anniversary edition but i did manage to add the Bose sound system, center console, tinted windscreen and CD changer to the already impressive standard specification.

Drive safe

Terry

I've made some tentative enquiries with OPC's over the last few days only to find that the anniversary edition is sold out. Only to be expected I suppose, but why are they still advertising it (as in last Saturday's Telegraph Magazine and this month's Christophorus)?

Suggests to me a cynical marketing ploy to get punters to buy a standard Boxster S once they find out from their OPC that the anniversary edition is no longer available.

Hi Ian,

Do you know how many were allocated to the UK?

If anyone has a scanner i would appreciate very much a picture of the advertisements.......not much to see in Chinese newspapers []

Capitalistdoginchina (takes a breath...), good on you sir to spurn the three pointed star and get yourself the best there is! Looking forward to hearing what you think of the 55. Have a look at this below.

More 550 info here

Hi Dapster,

Thanks for the link. That was the same info i had seen at the various Porsche worldwide websites and it enticed me to look further and hence place my order.

Were the advertizements in Christophorus and in the newspapers (In old blighty) based on the info in the link?

I have not told anyone at MB that i ordered the Porsche........not yet.

I saw some great pictures of this car here: Boxster S 550 Spyder

At the same site you can also see pictures of the awesome twin turbo Boxster made by Stola!! Stola 450 Bhp

Regards

Terry

Terry from your 550 link it was the 4th pitcure that was used in the Daily's and then the usual very tiny small print at foot of advert stating stats like price model performance stuff like that. My local OPC sold his allocation only last week ie 2 cars [;)] I was offered one back last September but have opted to go for the new model due out October 04.

As I am on my 4th Boxster since 97 I would like a change even though it will only be an evolution [8D]as opposed to a revolution ... Robert

Hi,

I got my name down for a Spyder anniversary edition in January. At the time, there were only two allocated to my dealar (Tonbridge), and I think the dealer only offered it to me because I was undecided between a Boxster and a Z4! The one allocated to me was only available because the guy who had been allocated it had cancelled the order.

My dealer has since been allocated another 2 special editions, but there seems to be about 15 or so people on the waiting list for them!

It arrives on March 1st!! I can't wait!

Hi
did you get your car?
if so would you mind confirming what the standard UK spec is? I have one on order but there still seems to be a lack of clarity as to what is and is not standard
TIA - enjoy
Andy

Andrew,

saw your post on boxa.net about getting a 550 - well done! Now you've just got to be patient until it's born.

The standard spec over the normal S is as follows:-

extra 6(!) bhp
shorter gear lever throw (reduced by 15%)
PSM
Sports Suspension (10mm lower)
5mm wheel spacers
seal grey spokes on 18" carrera wheels
crested wheel centres
aluminium painted callipers
S/S tailpipe
chrome Boxster S logo
silver painted grilles on rear apron
litronics
Heated leather sports seats
leather interior
special textured finish on seats, steering wheel etc
GT silver painted seat backs, roll over bars, rear console, switch surround dashboard trim and handbrake lever
no centre console
anniversary plaque
wind deflector
polished boxster s logo on door entries
floor mats with Porsche logo
black dials with silver bezels
on board computer
sound pack

Optional extras are

top tint w/screen (£67)
Tiptronic (£1758.98)
cruise (£293.75)
Bose (£424.18)
CD changer (£344.28)
CD Storage (£28.20)
PCM (£1654.40)
Phone module (£522.88)
Passive handset (£142.18)
Factory Collection (£840.00)

No cost options:-

dark grey natural leather with black hood
front centre console
silver wheel spokes

All this information is in the price list which the OPC I ordered mine from didn't seem to be aware of. Enjoy deciding your spec, although there's not that much you can add. When you add up the cost of the extras over the standard S you are saving £000s. Sounds like yours will arrive about the same time as mine. Can't work that out as I ordered 8 weeks ago!

cheers Ian; appreciate it - haven't had a delivery date confirmed but it is likely to be no later than June; have you heard of any probs with the seal grey painted wheels? I got the feeling that they were "problematical" for some reason?
will keep you updated re delivery etc; please do likewise
Andy

Andrew,

Haven't heard of any problems with the seal grey wheels. I changed my mind 3 times about them but chose them in the end and am glad I did as they look great "in the metal". Will be chasing up the OPC for a build date after easter and will keep you posted.

Ian

Andy did you go for the brown or grey interior

Seems like some speculators are trying to ca$h in early with there 550

Hi Rob
went for the more conformist black roof and dark grey interior; the OPC had a 40th anniversary 996 in the showroom with the same interior and I thought that it looked good.
the only additional options I went for was the Bose, autochanger and top tint (£57)[&o].
I didn't want the PCM/phone options as (just a personal view) I can't really relate to it in a sports car especially one which is used as a second car.
I should know about build/delivery on 29th April, it is likely to be June. pity that you can't track your new car like a UPS parcel[:D] it might make the time go a bit quicker!
I'm always a little saddened to see speculators cashing in when there has/is allegedly far more demand from genuine Porsche enthusiasts than supply; just economics I suppose.
regards
Andy
