6 Volt High Torque starter motors

Hi again Robin.....about Pertronix 6V in-distributor electronic units. I had them in three of my cars but I've removed them recently. They work OK as yours is but keep in mind that you loose about 0.5 Volts across the unit (when its conducting .....which it normally is) which is a fair percentage of loss from your nominal 6 Volt supply....which is only about 4.5 Volts when cranking. Despite this they do work on except....and here is the reason I junked them.....these 356 dizzys run pretty hot....too hot to hold in your hand on a summer day......thats probably 60 deg C on the case, maybe more and probably higher inside. 2 years ago I was on the Grossglockner climb in late summer, it was warm/hot but not HOT...as the climb proceeded I felt the car was getting down on power and on the last corner.....near the cafe.....the engine just stopped. Pretty tricky location. I guessed the Pertronix had over-heated ...probably the Hall-Effect sensor which gets the mag signals from the rotating magnet was unhappy or that the rotating magnet itself had a soft mag curve at these temperatures. Anyway, I had to wait 15 mins with the engine cover open and the dizzy cap off to let it cool off a bit before the engine would start. I'd had a similar problem when I came to restart the car at the autobahn services after a thrash. Heatsoak etc etc. Gloomy holiday ahead....fortunately I had a spare distributor with CBs set up for plug and play so I swapped the dizzies in the cafe car park. Nice view too. Back home I had a long chat with Pertronix's tech support guy but it was a waste of time, broken confidence etc so I reverted back to CBs on all my cars. Given the mileage I do wear on the CBs is not an issue and I get the best voltage swing on the coil when starting. Maybe I simply had a dodgy Pertronix but I don't think so. best regs Phil and Nora at the Super90 Speedshop, mid Wales, UK

The electronic 123 distributor might be the way forward.

They produce a model that the advance curve can be remotely programmed from your phone.

I have not tried one as yet but I am thinking about it.
