718 GTS 4.0 Insurance Cost

Hi all,

My Cayman GTS 4.0 arrives on the 1st March and I'm now looking into the insurance.

I have received a quote from Lockton who I thought would be competitive as they're a partner for PCGB. Their quote is coming in at £2k per year, whereas Admiral is coming in at £752. I appreciate that agreed value & nominating your own repairer is a nice addition to have, and I’m certainly happy to pay extra for the service from Lockton, but at £1300 extra I’m struggling to justify the value.
What insurance are other members using and are there any recommendations from your own experiences?

As an aside, here's the model I ordered, any comments welcome.

worth a read

Admiral are generally well regarded, especially if you have a multi car policy... and you always have the right to nominate your own repairer

Also, note the potential issues around applying PPF and even a ceramic coating....not all underwriters cover this, with some voiding policies....

Thanks Greenman, a useful thread. And I'm making sure PPF & the ceramic coating is specified on any proposal

Locktons are frequently the highest cost. On my SRS Classic Line 5k miles are £1,290 versus Locktons' £1,971.

The point to look for in evaluating premiums is whether they allow choice of repairer. I guess most will accept that non-OPC will invalidate warranty so will give on that but best to be clear in writing on this point.

I look for included track day cover (not just PCGB days) so my good experience of ClassicLine may not be relevant and they do require garaging at night. You may find them competitive on price.

I added a non-track Boxster 4.0L GTS to my LV multicar insurance and it was an extra £766 annual rate. Others will no doubt be along with their experiences and will likely be as individual as mine.

P.S. apropos Greenman points, Classic Line are very relaxed on modifications inc PPF. I didn't specify ceramic coating in addition as it has full PPF with ceramic on top.

Thanks Ralph, very helpful. I'll look into Classic Line.

Admiral on my 4.0 and yes Admiral will allow your own repairer but estimates must be approved by them before work begins.

One thing to explores is that apparently the small print in Admiral policies excludes participation in any events organised by a car club. There is a thread on the forum somewhere where a member who was an Admiral policyholder specifically queried this with Admiral and received the reply that taking part in any PCGB events (even parking at a show) would not be covered. Now, I haven't seen the documentation, and it was perhaps a couple of years ago so could have been changed, but I'd want to explore this properly before opting for one of their policies.

Personal experience:

Have used LV for my 2009 Boxster for 5 years. Always the lowest cost but reads to be a good all-round cover.
I do not do track days but do attend a few PCGB events, ie Silverstone.

A few years ago I participated on the Silverstone record attempt for the most Porsches on track. The car was not covered but it was in my classic 911.

My LV 2024/25 premium went DOWN by £14, but is about £450 iirc fully comp, full NCD, 8,000 miles.
I cannot find anyone cheaper with a good reputation.

You only know if the Company is good when you go through a claim!
I live in the busy West Mids.

Thanks Wollemi, some very good points made which I'll fully research.

Always good to hear a viewpoint from a personal experience. LV actually came up on my Go Compare search, so I'll try them. Thank you.

I have just switched to LV. Excesses are circa £600 but I wouldn't claim for less. Mileage is 3k on the Boxsters and 9k on the Macan. Boxster and Macan have business use and I don't do track days but do European travel.

Very interesting numbers.
Use of course = risk, so the cost goes up.
I have 5K miles on the Boxster for Euro tour, one per year. That and domestic use just about creeps in at 5K miles.

In some contrast, my 1973 911 is very modified and agreed value @ £50K.
unlimited miles " because classic cars are hardly used".
On the same cover i have my LOLA hillclimb car covered agreed £50K, covered while on the road by trailer and covered for fire/theft etc while stationary anywhere.
Also the trailer covered for £2K.

With Hagerty for years and just over £300 for this lot.
Mods no problem, both cars garaged.

Thanks for the very helpful replies. A quote from LV was around 1k. It's going to be kept on the driveway which I think is pushing up the cost. The cheapest so far is Admiral around £700, but I need to check the policies to cover off PPF, European travel and car club events.

Please do share the outcome of checking with admiral re 'organised car events'

From the Admiral Policy documents

'Where am I covered? You're covered when driving your vehicle in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. I think they'd need to prove you were on an organised drive rather that just a couple of mates meeting up for a drive in the country.

From memory it was the "organised motoring event" which the person on the earlier thread queried, and was told if it organised by PCGB, then it's an organised event. And on further clarification this would include being parked at a show. And with the way insurers work, if they suspected you were on a PCGB drive or attending a show the onus would be on you to prove that you were not at that event rather them having to prove that you were. Many people do choose to take the risk; I personally wouldn't.
I also note that Admiral don't provide full cover for European use - it's only legal minimum cover. Presumably you can pay extra though for full cover.

Admiral Insurance.

We had a multi-car policy with Admiral, following concerns raised on the forum, when our insurance was due for renewal I queried the wording of the policy documents and specifically asked the representative if we would be covered whilst out on organised drives with the club and at shows (he was a member of a car club), he went away to seek advice from the underwriters.

The response from the underwriters was that being on organised club runs and attending shows was a "grey area" and would really need to be tested in court following a claim.

We did not want to risk being the "test case" and insured our cars with Aviva who were comparable in cost and do cover being on organised drives and shows although the policy specifically excludes the Nurbergring.

Hope this helps, ask the questions and read the small print.

Good Luck

Mike
