72E targa

I'm think of buying of 72 E targa, I'll be buying over the net and will not be able to view the car first, so its just pictures before comitting. The car looks original and unmolested but needs some restoration. Before going further I need to check out the engine/chassis numbers, (the seller has published these on the net )do the engine and chassis numbers make sense?

The car also has chrome head light bezels and black horn grills, is this corect?

Black Horn grills were for 73 model onwards so they are not original.

You would be wise to obtain an independent report on the car even if you do see it in the flesh otherwise you could be in for some surprises.
 
The VIN number matches an E Series (1972) 911 Targa E. The switch to black side lights trims front and back plus black horn grills was for the F Series (1973).

Not uncommon to find the silver/black trims mixed and matched over the years when being replaced.

The engine number makes sense as well for a 1972 engine. I have 73 E who's engine starts 623xxxx. The third digit on the engine number signifies the year (2 = 72, 3 = 73) I believe so 622xxxx for a 72 would be correct.

I don't think you can tell from the engine number itself whether it's a T,E or S engine.

Thanks, for the replies, any thoughts on the value for a ex european LHD car that spent most of its life in the states, its in a nice yellow colour (code 917) and all seems present and correct, toolkit, spare wheel etc. the interior is worn and it will need a respray, it also comes with a lot of history from new

Bruce i think ur incredibly brave contemplating this , especially with a Traga of this age .................why not go for something u can literally get urr hands on to see rust /faults etc ............no connection to me ,other than i am on the thread but theres a lhd silver targa on ddk-online for £15k with a fair amount done and restored ...........Targas shipped a lot of water in the doors,no cappings and rear windows to rear wings could be a real pain ,u or an experienced person need to inspect closely ...............By the way u can have chrome headlamp rings and black horn grilles this wud be standard for any '73 model , mine was built Dec '72 , '73 model .......................................
 
I echo Vic's comments. Buying an early 911, especially a Targa, unseen is a recipe for a great deal of expense. Cars from the USA are usually pretty from a distance, and a horror underneath if you get down on your knees.

The numbers look right for a possible matching numbers 72E Targa.
 
Dangerous ground Paul...............................towards the ice cream float of course! Moss started all this suggesting a knees down!
 
Agreeably surprised by honest overall look of it, luv that colour................cud make a list of obvious things from seats/roof to oil under floor from piccies ........................all very do-able standard stuff for recognised cost .........................however how to know if the rear seats have rusted through under the squabs is a starter for the other side of the equation , Good exchange rate but ur going to pay HMG a few quid plus ins and freight and even if u get it well below asking make some estimates and i reckon u can hit £20k plus in no time and still have some to do .........................always was a pessimist!
By the way that is a 72 model , oil flap on side= chrome horn grills ,and shud be silver edges for lenses , but has Eu head lamp rims instead of US spec horrors
Will start striking bravery awards shortly ...................buy here or in Eu if u can get to it physically
 
Vic's right, it doesn't look bad at all and £20K - £25K all in will see it done if there are no major problems.

There is a Gemini Blue LHD 2.4E Targa at the place that does my engine work and it will be for sale soon at around £13K. I saw it up on the ramp and its perfect undeneath. The owner is having them Timecert the cases (it has a later 2.7 motor).... Give GCS Engineering a call on 01403 891060

I've been checking out thes hipping costs and its all looking real expensive so far:-

transport and delibery £3000ish
VAt @17.5 % £1600ish
Duty 10% £1000ish
SVA £600ish

Did you "T" cost as much to get back David

Any other ideas to reduce costs?

 
Cost is $16,000
Freight from Ca would be around $2000

Landed cost in £ @ 1.887 = £9,540
Duty at 10% on cost plus freight: $954
VAT at 17.5% on total: £1836
Clearance and delivery in UK around £600
Total: £12,950

There is no SVA required just the bits to pass an MOT: Conversion of headlamps to left dip, Euro rear indicator lenses: around £300

Not a bad car for under £13,500!
