'83 930 turbo RHD buying advice

Hello all,

Apologies if this has been answered on a previous thread...

I am looking into taking the plunge with an '83 930 turbo and was wondering if there were any comments and opinions to be offered to a 1st time Porsche buyer on this possible purchase?

I have test driven a few 911's and 964's and have researched extensively on the common problems and pitfalls associated with them, however, I have no idea on the pro's and cons of the 930's. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Pierre

ps: 1st post here so a big hello to all and sundry

Hello, for what it is worth here is my bit, I have been looking myself for nearly two years. Had four PPI's done on so called good one's all failed badly with the sellers asking silly money as well.
A key fact has been silly money, all because of the badge on the front of the car.
Value wise you should find a good one for between £14000 -£ 18000 some people will want more in the £20000 + some under £14000.
Many people are finding it hard to sell them, and prices are going down they will be down more next year.
Do not touch one without a PPI report first it will tell you the whole story of the car warts and all make sure it also has a FSH as well. Condition is also a key factor as to miles on the clock. Again some people say four speed better suits the 930. Some say five speed is better motorway etc, all depends on what comes up and the price. I would hate to pass on a four speed which was good for the sake of waiting for a five speed which may not be in such good condition.

Goodluck

It can be difficult to find a good one, but if you look hard enough and get lucky you could even find a 5 speed 930 for around the £20k mark.
I agree that you should have any prospective purchase thoroughly checked by a specialist, but one who has experience of 911 Turbos in particular - the financial penalties for buying a wrong 'un can be severe.
So far as a Full Service History is concerned, it is not necessary, and is indeed unlikely on a car that is over 20 years old....but great if you do find one.
What is far more important is either that there is recent service history with a recognised specialist, backed by detailed bills, or that any issues identified during your Pre Purchase Inspection are factored into the price that you ultimately pay for the car.
Good luck.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen.

Am having the car checked by a specialist, hopefully today, and am having a HPI check done also.
The car is in the 20k category so will know to expect nothing less than a near pristine example for this. It apparently has all documentation since original purchase bar one MOT certificate, so this is initially quite encouraging.

Will check the service history for signs of TLC on the part of previous owners and definitely check for PSH or specialist service history.

I'll let you know how it goes...

Will obviously be applying for membership with club should the purchase go through, so may be "seeing" more of you in the future.

Many thanks again,

Pierre

Hello, maybe just me but sounds like a bit much for a 83 model at that price.
Plus not being a five speed box either!!!. A PPI should include a HPI check anyway in the price the ones I have had always did.

My 2p worth in addition to the above. I bought my 89 5spd 60k miles with great history and condition for 23k.Very pleased with it and won a concourse prize in the summer. However i am caught in a dilemma. It is too good to modify but i have also come to realise how much is possible if you do modify! I could spend 5k to bring it up to 993tt levels but it would be worth less than now! Good luck, john

Hello, your right all depends what you want from the car very rare you get what you put into a car money wise back.
But it is the buzz you get from the car driving it etc.

Plus each year prices go down as well on the car and most people now do not want a car that has been messed around with.

Enjoy the car.

pierre, the '83 cars were the last ones before they fitted the heavy electric seats, so will be the lightest 3.3 turbo. fit a new wastegate spring and sports exhaust and it will fly! 4 speed box ,but amaze your mates with a car that will do 90 in second gear.........downsides? no power steering ,so heavy when parking , and no abs and takes a lot to stop the thing, oh ,and your misses wont like it!

Sounds like it may have been that mint cond red one on the Pistonheads link above.

I would love that but it is over my budget. I emailed the seller directly and said if he had no luck and needed to sell, then I could go to around £17k, but he never replied.

Be interested to know what it does finally go for.

remember people saying that about 2.7 carreras a few years ago! turned down £18,500 for mine last year, keeping it as a pension fund yours for £55,000 in 2025

Hello all and a happy new year to boot!

Sorry I haven't posted a response before now, but have been on holiday for the new year.

I had a private inspection done on the car (it was the one Keith linked to!) and came back disapointed!
There was alot of rust on the pipes and trunking under the car, no viewable reg document and no history associated with that plate with HPI. The car wouldn't start at all to begin with - there may have been wiring issues and it wouldn't rev comfortably past 3500rpm!
I have left it where it is.

I have, however, seen one on pistonheads: '86 930 that looks to be in good condition. 23K asking is a little steep though but will see once I have recieved the report.

Chris: Who is Charles Ivey? Where would I find an advert for the car?

Thanks for all your $0.02 worth guys, much obliged.

Will let you know how the next one pans out!

Pierre

Pierre

Charles Ivey advertise in Porsche Post and in some of the othe Porsche mags. It's interesting that the gold 930 they have has been steadily increasing in price - £16995 in Novemebr, £17995 in December and now £18995 in the latest issue.

they've either been working through the faults on the car or read the article in classic and sporstscar mag saying the 930 is a bargain supercar , and are currently cheaper righthand drive ,in the uk , than lhd in europe and usa !
