Keith: I had someone look over the 20K one that you saw on Pistonheads and it was a definite no-no! Which was a shame really as the interior and paintwork were gleaming.
The PPI was more then worth it, yes. Having an independant person look at these is such a boon as I'm one for driving a nice car and with the grin still on my face allowing myself to gloss over the bits I don't want to see when considering a purchase! I can't imagine how disapointed I would have been to have had to deal with all the issues exposed by the inspection.
I did that with my current car and even though I knew there were some problems with it, my good sense seemed to leave me once I'd been for a spin. Regretted it in the long run...
Am having the inspection done on the 23K car tomorrow so will let you know how it went. Seems nice and clean from what I can gather. Has been in a private collection for many years, has 30K (ish) miles on the clock and is only on its fourth owner which is encouraging.
Fingers crossed!
NB: By the way, are you able to gain pcgb membership prior to the car purchase?

Got the PPI report back and the car is very clean and well looked after. Mileage looks genuine and all in all it is a very tidey example.
The car has, however, been in dry storage for 12 years of its life and as such has no record of servicing etc... in that period. Is this necessarily an issue or is the fact that the car is still very nice testament to the fact that the storage is a moot point?
The car has had an above average respray and very few other touches to it's original condition and short of a good service does not require any immediate attention.
The price is 23K though and after what many have said on this post I'm reticent about this as a realistic asking price, or does the condition and the low mileage negate this worry?
Any thoughts appreciated,
Pierre

Long term storage and little or no use has the potential to be a huge problem, particularly in respect of flexible components like seals and bushes.
That price is still expensive, and doesn't give you any margin whatsoever for error, so be very careful indeed. Did you get any sort of guarantee with your PPI in the event of problems becoming apparent?

The car was stored up until 2002 and had a major service before road use that year. The service included new bearings, a gearbox rebuild and more minor things. The car has covered average "3rd car" mileage since then but has been in regular use for the last three years. Would any of the issues you both describe not have materialised in this intervening period?
The PPI explicitly DOES NOT cover/guarantee me for any engine malfunctions/issues, no.

I decided to not go for the car in the end for two reasons... a) Was a little reticent about the dry storage issues that were brought up on the forum and was considering allowing a engineer to go over the mechanicals before buying.... and b) have since fractured my clavicle into lots of little annoying pieces playing rugby and as such am not getting behind the wheel of anything for the near future! [
Am hopefully seeing a specialist orthopaedic surgeon in a couple of weeks and will have to put off my turbo ideas until I can drive again (or at least sit in a sports car again!).
All good things come to those who wait etc...!
