86 Turbo options

Hi I own a pretty battered up eBay purchase that I have decided to spend some money on. It was touch and go whether I committed tbh but she is an MOT failure due to rusted sills and the resale value without work about 50% of initial purchase.

My question is does anyone have colour options exterior and interior for 1986 Turbo. Also wheel options to. It's bern messed about with and I'd like to at least to reproduce the car as if she'd left the factory after the boxes had been ticked. Possibly not nessasarily as she did originally in 86 but definitely within Porsches options.

Many thanks

Ian

Hi Ian
Is it an early or late offset car - early ones had 16" teles with optional Fuchs, late ones 16" teles (late offset!) with forged Gulliduckles as the options.
Other options are just like any other 944, many and various!

86 Cars are all early offset. Tele's or Forged Rims.

Standard UK spec included Aircon, sunroof, elec mirrors, H/L wash, Alarm, tinted glass, Screen Ariel, Central Locking

Options were Cruise Control, LSD, Elec Seats, Sports Seats, Leather trim, top tint screen, (Forged Rims (Fuchs), with body colour centres), split rear seats. Koni Dampers / Sports springs

Your ECU has 24 Pins utilised as opposed to the later cars 28 Pins. (check exact with some one like JMG or Promax)

The Car was about 60kg lighter than the later wide offset car with ABS and other "improvements". The 86 car will have softer torsion bars and springs which are considered a nicer package if you don't plan to win Le Mans or take out the GT2's at Spa

They are getting rare now, good luck with her.

If I have any other Colour / Trim info I will add the details.

Your 944T was more expensive than the 3.2 Carrera of the day, and not too many boxes were ticked. The only important one was the diff IMO

Many thanks, anywhere I could grab option codes?

Also I've a big wad of service notes and a heck of a lot of work has been done but no actual literature from Porsche at purchase. Is there a site I can find the cared option via its chassis number?

I will expand on this completely correct but slightly misleading comment:

All 1986 model year cars used early offset wheels, but model years and production years weren't concurrent. 1986 model year cars were built from September 1985 (although not strictly accurate for the Turbo) until August 1986. Cars built from September 1986 were 1987 model year cars and used later offset wheels. Unfortunately the majority of people aren't familiar with this, hence talk of 1985 Turbos and 1986 cars which used the later offset...

Car has a 1st August 1986 registration date so early offset then?

What is the actual difference early/late?

Thanks Simon.

Sutters, that Clarks garage link is a really good one for 944's

I have not come across a Forum or Site where an individual car Option codes can be identified. If you want that its a Porsche Build Certificate you need, which the some-one may direct you to, not sure. That will give the Vehicle VIN, build date, Ship date, Colours, Specs including Option codes.

Have you checked the build sticker in the rear, inside the boot, behind the carpet, on the back panel beside the N/S/R tail lamp

This is the best 944 forum I have encountered in 10 years of messing with turbo's. There is a lot of knowledge around which has been very helpful.

Yes reading I can get the option codes from the sticker by the spare wheel (cars at ProMax at the mo).

Being registered then it is almost certainly an early offset car - the bad news is both the standard 16" teles and the option Fuchs are expensive! Good news is most later Porsche wheels will fit with spacers.

Early offset - wheels have 23mm offset - late 52 -60mm as they tend to have wider rears.

Wishbones , hubs and steering geo are all different early/late. The early set up is generally thought to be sharper the later more GT.

Later cars had most of these changes to enable ABS to be fitted - not all were but it was possible.

Internally, the 1986 cars and later are very similar - called the oval dash as opposed to the square dash previously made.

Any questions just ask we know they can be perplexing!

Post up the numbers and I can look up the Option description from a list, or DIY on Clarkes Garage.

The Teledials are not too expensive if you are patient and buy 'em right. Remember there are relatively few early cars to wear them now....[8|]

It wasn't really misleading, so sorry for my misleading remark. [:D]

Autoatlanta used to have a VIN option tool which listed all of the option and build codes. They still have it but they need a valid invoice number before you can access it now.

All very valid replies and much appreciated. The car does have tele dial wheels already although black Fuch would be my option but that expenditure will be at a much later date if at all.

The car is off to Retro restorer in a week or two for the sills to be sorted and some paint, the rusty mess was hidden under 968 side skirts which no doubt will be a pig to be removed as they look bonded on. Then its back to Promax for the tinkering and ill take it from there.

She is Stone grey metallic with black/cream split dash and black centre console, al carpets are cream to. Now the seats front and rear and the door panels have been changed to a black with grey inserts and piping, liveable with a full black carpet set but looks a mess to me as is. Hence I wanted to know how she left the factory. I can ponder the option to return her to 1986 glory or come up with a factory option that is both acceptable to me and the avid Porsche 944 buyer in the future.

Ian

I would guess she was originally Stone Grey (very nice) with Linen.
The Dash would be Black / Cream as described, also the Door Cards, the Seats / Carpets would be Cream. Console should be Cream.
Good combination IMO.
I put 50K miles on a Black Car with Linen and 40 on a Red with Black Pinstripe, and 40 on a Red with Black Leather, and Black becomes a bit monotonous.
Good to gear you are getting the basics sorted properly

My linen interior with leather faced seats. Second one I've had like it, don't think I could cope with all black!

Not Linen. Linen was a 1989 colour. Before that it was Light Grey, which was similar to the series one Grey-Beige, and Grey-Beige was a far less misleading colour name.

Ian, I know experience here has been mixed but Porsche GB offer a certificate of authenticity service which lists exterior and interior finish and factory options as supplied plus some other information about the supplying dealer etc. It worked well for me and I think I'm right in saying that this is a free service with club membership. Great to hear that another 86 Turbo is being saved. According to howmanyleft.co.uk there are only 7 86MY turbos registered......... Mark

My 86 Turbo is also at Retro Restorer to have a mystery coolant leak fixed and some paint touched up where the lacquer is peeling. It's the Zermatt Silver one that hopefully is tucked away safely in his lock up over Christmas. Say hello to it when you are in there!

This certificate could be just what I'm after. Any further information on how to acquire one?

I filled out the form that came with my membership pack and sent it off, I'm sure you could get one from the club if you don't have one.
