911 for sale on ebay

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site and I'm not sure if this is the done thing.

There is a 911 on ebay that I'm quite keen on, I've spoken with the seller and he kept mentioning no warranty's as it's a private sale and it's sold as seen etc, I'm well aware of how a private sale works but it started alarm bells ringing when he kept mentioning this.

I did tell the seller I'd be looking at getting a Porsche specialist to check it over before parting with my cash to which he said any inspection is welcome.

Oil leaks on 996s can be very costly also I don't like the style of the advert, the whole tone is awful, Id keep searching.. 996s with high milages can be very expensive to repair, have a quick search about RMS, IMS and bore scoring, if any of these are present you could be tackling a 10K+ repair bill.

If you are serious about buying this car then I would seriously consider an independent inspection and maybe check a few more out before committing to part with your cash. These are very expensive cars to fix, buy a bad one and your in for a horrible ride, on the other hand a well looked after 911 can be very reliable and rewarding to drive.

thanks for the response, I have done a fair bit of reading over the past month or so and your quite right it can turn nasty very easily.

In all honesty I didn't get a good feeling when I spoke with the guy at all so maybe best left well alone.

Leave this well alone mate. IMHO you get a gut feel for a motor by the initial approach and how communication is handled. Looks like the guy selling this needs some PR lessons. The car may well be OK but as has been suggested they can be very expensive to repair.

Keep looking and something will come along mate

Any ad that starts with capital letters, laying down their terms with explanation marks is read no further. What is a 'Carrera S' anyway?
 
I personally don't think the advert looks that bad... just honest in that he doesn't want time wasters. What I would say is to be mindful of the age old 'you get what you pay for'. This seems too cheap for a decent 996 these days. Just my gut feel. Having said that, if you're going to buy one cheaper than the going rate, in particular, I'd get an inspection done by a specialist. Good luck with your search! John.

Seems for a lot of sellers every Porsche must be an S. It is a close run thing whether more 996 sellers or base model Cayenne sellers make that mistake.
 
Another top tip when buying a 996 is go for manual box, the tip box feels archaic by todays standards. A manual is much more fun to drive imho.

If the car is a toy buy for fun,
manual = fun
tip = lazy, slow, boring
 
The Tiptronic S is an upgrade to the original Tiptronic, with the ability to adapt to driver's behaviour, and also allows driver to change gears without entering manual mode. In manual mode, if there is no driver input for a period of eight seconds, the system reverts to automatic mode. I would assume the S means Sport but thats a guess..

Its still crap though!
 
Many of us in this club have or have had tiptronics personnaly I love them. To use a tip in man mode if you use it properly Is great fun you have driven one a dodgy box
 
Ive driven plenty of tips and owned one, all are slow reacting gear boxes, the main positive about the tip has lead to the development of the PDK. I own a PDK car and its great but I would never revert back to a tiptronic should I buy an older Porsche, always manual. With tip I don't feel connected with the car, the gear changes seem so disconnected and not let the car do what I want it to do, even in tip manual.

Manual boxed cars sell much easier than tips, the 0-60 time is slower in a tip, the tip gear change is delayed and the gear change buttons on the steering wheel are horrendous. The only benefit from owning a tip is (imo) when being sat it traffic and having the stop/start option without depressing a clutch.

So to sum up my opinion of the Tiptronic box is well built and reliable but has that boring feel about it, the manual feels alive and connects man and machine to the road. I would strongly recommend that anybody wanting to buy an older Porsche should test drive different cars with different boxes and make their own mind up. Yes, if that person is looking for a city cruiser or a motorway car a tip will do but if you want to drive a Porsche and get the most out of it (on early cars) then buy manual.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that summary of the tip box. I had 2, and for the London market they probably sell as well or better than manuals. I really liked my tips, very smooth changes, not jerky and extremely reliable.

You can't compare it to a PDK of course, but in its class for its age it compared very well with its competitors.

Yes if you want to be more connected to your car buy a manual, but if you use your car in traffic or as a daily the Tip is a good option.
 
Hi Rod, its horses for courses, tip is fine in a city but not as good on open windy roads or track, personally if I lived in London I would not use a Porsche 911 as a daily but for the people who do a tip would be a better option. In my post I wasn't comparing Tip with PDK, I was referring that tip s technology had lead to the development of the PDK box, acorns to oak trees stuff, everything has to start somewhere. This doesn't make tip good or bad but when theres and offering of manual to tip I would 100% say manual is a better drivers car and thats what Porsche intends to be.

Currently I own a C2S PDK and a 944 manual, the PDK goes against everything Ive always preached but used properly and when manual mode is selected its great, on the other hand I would never discount a manual box, the demise of a manual boxed Porsche is happening and its due to the PDK super fast gear change. Im regularly looking at 911s for sale and Im finding it increasingly difficult to find a decent specked manual, this 'imo' will push the price of manual boxed cars up as the market is flooded with PDKs so again in my opinion manuals will be easier to sell due to its rarity just as the older manuals are easier to sell than tip s.

This is all my opinion, I'm no expert and I'm not looking for a poo throwing match Im just very passionate about cars so what I'm saying is when I buy a tin of beans I want it to contain beans just as when I buy Porsche I want it to drive like a Porsche. Tip s is old now just as are the PCM 1,2,,3 and I wouldn't rave that technology either.

And I'm still voting leave

 
I absolutely agree with everything you've just written.

My only concern is that people who want to buy a Porsche and for whatever reason would prefer to buy a tip (commute, traffic, daily driver etc) shouldn't be put off by it being touted as being a rubbish auto. I really quite liked it.

More and more sports car buyers prefer an auto these days (and I don't think that's just down to the boxes being better) so I wouldn't want a prospective buyer to think that unless they bought a manual they might as well not bother and go to another brand altogether.
 
One tip about a 'tip' as buyers point of view is generally speaking they are usually kept in better condition over a manual. The overall mechanicals, interior and exterior generally are more cared for than a manual of the same age. If I was using mine as a daily driver, then I would not worry owning a tip.
