Did I miss something ?

On Page 129 of the April edition, David Sutherland talks about a RHD 964RS being £15,000 more expensive than LHD versions. Now, I know there is usually a price hike for RHD over left, but due to the LHD having no power steering and some other minor variations (which, say purists actually improve the drive), I actually thought the differentials were getting close to negligable.

An RS for £20k ? Where ? (DE perhaps)...

Anyhow, I bow to this forum to correct me..(and 911 PW)

As usual the motoring press get it wrong again.RHD values over LHD are fairly narrow for comparable cars....I would now estimate about 20% thus a £30K LHD would be about £36K RHD. Although demand is Worldwide with LHD. UK is probably the place to buy a LHD, values here are lower than Germany at the moment, some have gone back. There seems a lack of privately advertised cars at the moment.....most dealer ads are not physical cars in stock but seem to originate from www.911-rs.de H&S in Germany. The early LHD shells were true lightweight production, with seam welds and various harness and cage points. Towards end of production Porsche used the C2 shells when they ran out.

Oh and RS for £20k! Those days long gone unless it's a had a very hard life in very poor condition etc....reasonable cars should start at about £27,000 + these will continue to appreciate simply because Porsche will never reproduce this pure form of 911 driving again....it's gone forever particularly 964RS Lightweight (yes and Clubsport) the soul of the 2.7RS but with the modern power and set-up that still looks like a 911........buy one and stick it in your pension fund...........

In round figures, look at asking price of £30K for a left-hooker, £40K for a right....latter has power steering and offset pedals....who needs it....

www.shirleys-garage.co.uk has a 964RS RHD at £35,950 and thats a dealer car seems very nice surprised still available.....

How do I know if I've got an early one or a late one and were all RHD cars of inferior shell type or again just late ones.
 
Have a look to see if the vin number is on the left hand A post pillar. Mine is 1975 (last 4 digits)I have seen a 1984 but that is getting near the last 50 made. I do not know if RHD have the serial no there , the other place is on the o/side wing in the luggage compartment. I do not know about which are seam welded and which are not, I thought they all were. They need to be with competion suspension. I find that most of the Later cars have 92litre longrange tank. As For values why would you want to pay extra for RHD? More weight, bad driving position, small tank.

I'm hoping to buy one early next week. It's a 964RS VIN is within first 150 of 1992 ZN production run, so it should be "Lightweight & Seamwelded" ??

It's got a 92Litre tank, strut brace, revalved front end [Tech9] 300 BHP, film, sensor, cup tube etc. Rebuilt top end last week. New genuine components used, inc Cyl Heads. Steel brake lines etc etc

I will certainly understand it on a 1100 mile return journey, my ears will be hurting.

Re seamwelding, my RS is no. 0650 (a 1991) and this did not have a seam welded shell. Needless to say when my tech found this on a shell-up rebuild he got jiggy with a welding gun and added a few welds where required - but not the full seamweld monty; there was some reason why he didn't (probably make the RS too stiff, or it was too awkward or something).
 
isn't the seamwelding one of those semi urban myths with RS's? you always get told that it was done, but nobody seems to know if its true or not....
 
I think it was done on the clubsport spec cars but not the standard 'lightweights' or tourings.

I must admit to thinking mine had seamwelds until my tech proved otherwise.
 
i keep meaning to have a look on mine...but keep on driving it instead [;)]

to be fair i've also little idea of where i should be looking, and just the thought of climbing through/around the cage in the back to see makes me want to go and lie down exhausted
 
My VIN ends 1125. Is it as simple as this was the 1125 made?

Should you be able to tell if its seem welded by looking underneath the door rubber or am I bonkers?

Des where has your car been, not putting that anti chip crap on it again are you? You should leave it natural after all does a woman look better with or without the face pack?

After reading all this seam welding lark, I'm gonna have nightmares about my Std. C2 falling to pieces next time I start the engine because some guy named Hans welded it together with a blow-torch instead of nifty Klaus with his seam-welding-super-thingy-tool!!!!! [&:]

I bet Mel has more seam welds than Jeff's!!!

hasn't your car been back to Belfast to be re-riveted by Harland & Wulf. I thought Cup cars were made that way!!

The topic of seam welds has come up before, I would love to know the answer. My old Red RS was chassis No 2013 so one of very last and it had the 92 ltr tank. My Yellow RS is an early chassis No and there are quite a few differences i.e. standard tank. With regards to values I think Des hit the nail on the head, six to eight grand differential. It should be noted that you are buying a Very rare car indeed if you buy RHD as there were only 50 UK RHD to the best of my knowledge. Some of which were touring spec. For most RS buyers RHD is a waste of money as the cars will have most use on a track.

Don't be soft ! having been in RSKIWI's , and 3 other RS's, I can vouch that it is actually quieter than mine - and significantly so....I think it's the effect of that had stitched "[FONT=Times New Roman"]Carrera RS[FONT=verdana,geneva"]" logo on the rear carpet.[;)]
 
Hello Peter. What colour is your C2 ? There's a guy in R10 (I cannot recall his name) that has a really clean C2 and It's up for sale. I'm sure that it will sell, but what is the market price these days for a C2 ? Is it Sub £10k yet or is that pending the 911PW article [:D][:D][:D]
