930 and a problem or two!

Hi Chris'
My name is Bryan and I have just purchased a 930 and am in desperate need of advice on the correct book/books I will require to get to grips with my new toy. I want to know the location and function of all the electrical components and how to fix those small problems very similar to the ones you have already encountered (Oil pressure gauge (Druk on 5)). I also need information on adjusting the tickover (slightly slow) and how the heating system should work (still a black art for me using the controls) and with air con thrown in I can only select cold or tropical. Hope you can help advise, Cheers in advance for your help and cooperation.

Hi,

No, it certainly IS NOT for sale. The previous owner must have advertised it before it was sold and before it went to print.

I'm loving it to bits and certainly won't be for sale for a while yet. Its taken me 20 odd years of dreaming to get get it!

I am still getting to grips with all the bits and bobs on it. Most of it is up together now to be honest. I'm just doing the basics now. It will be going in for a service soon etc too.

Hi,

More updates on my 930 problems!

Sorted my cigarette lighter issue now (not working) and it was simply that the feed pin on the back of it had come off. Pushed it back in and tested for 12v and a good result: FIXED.

Whilst piddling around with the interior I noticed that the drivers seat backrest wasnt moving forward (it did at one point) so next job was to fix that. Out came the seat and took the seat switch out (watch the ball bearings if you try it). The switch contacts looked very dirty so out of the toolbox comes my trusty fibre pen. A bit of cleaning later and the seat stuffed back in the car and wired up I tested it. As if by magic: FIXED.

The list seems endless because whilst I was getting to the back of the cigarette lighter behind the blower motor etc I thought I'd take a look into why my fresh air blower doesnt appear to work. Hmmm, what on earth can that be....looks a bit burnt to me. More examination and I see a completely burnt out black wire. Following this along I see some more wires have been damaged / melted. Two brown earth wires which connect to the back of the clock and the earth wire which piggybacks with another wire on an earth spade on the back of a dial. A white with green wire also looks a bit rough which goes to one of the dash bulbs. I think because some of the wires are earth wires everything seems to be working but the black wire has GONE.

What a saga I'm having....What makes it worse is that the black burnt wire goes into a "knuckle" in the main loom behind the dash and its flippin awkward to open the wrapping. I'm thinking this wire is probably the feed wire to the blower so I go to the fusebox and take an educated guess as to which terminal it could be fed from. Hmmm, how about the black wire which is fed from the same fuse as the cigarette lighter. What do you know, the wire "bells out" from the black wire connected to the fuse and also the end I found on the burnt wire behind the heater indicating continuity.

Intrigue makes me think I had better just start unwrapping the loom wiring until I find what appears to be a "normal looking" black wire, ie, one that isnt completely burnt. I think I might end up doing some replacement wiring to sort this little lot out. The thing I'm thinking of is why did it get to this anyway. I'm kind of thinking the wire took a bit too much current to the point of meltdown. My luck is that I'll replace all the dodgy wiring and find the blower or something heats up the wire and I end up in a circle. Maybe it'll be a good idea to test the current flow before putting everything back together!!!

Well in fairness I'm enjoying these little jobs albeit in a funny sort of way.

I'll post as I continue this saga, lol.

I'm back with an update!

The wiring has now been sorted out. I have cut and soldered in new wiring of the correct spec so shouldnt be having any more problems there.

The black wire turned out to be the wire which goes to the luggage compartment light. I had to cut the loom tape in quite a few places to get to the bottom of it.

The drivers side mirror had no 12v going to the motor. Having got hold of another mirror and also taking my original one apart and testing it I can see that it does actually work fine. Whilst fixing the last lot of wires I am hoping I may have now fixed the feed to the mirror. Everything looks to be ok but just havent tested it yet.

Done a few more little jobs here and there and so I'm finally gettting through it all. I need to put the heater and plenum back in place now and then rewrap all the wiring loom. I think I may have one or two jobs left to do after this along with some heater pipe work under the passenger side dash. Then its probably in for a service.

Wish I had your ability and patience!

My solution to such problems would be to buy a 997 unless my pal parts with his 996TT before.

But I still haven't got aorund to selling my 930 yet.

Out of interest, I use Tesco 99 octane fuel or Optimax but have run on unleaded without any real issue.

I've had lots of different recommendations about the fluids but the consensus seems to be to use Mobil 1 in semi-synthetic or synthetic form depending on who you talk to. I was advised to change brake and clutch fluids to some specific types more suited to track days. I can check on what these were if it is of any interest.

I never push the car until the engine is thoroughly warmed up, sometime levaving the car running before a drive and this does affect the transmission. But I think our cars have different boxes?

I wouldn't place a lot of trust in the oil level guage at any point although clearly you have more practical experience than me. Better to check the oil regularly.

Hello,

I havent really been using the 930 much at all this I purchased it. I doubt I have driven it more than 8 times so far. I used to use Optimax in my old MR2 and will be using that in the 930 again. All my guages are fine now and everything in that department is as it should be.

Yes, you do have a different box to me but maybe there is something in warming them up first. Even when everything has warmed up engine wise I dont go wild. I didnt buy her to be like that, it was simply a 20 year dream to get one. Now I have it and found out how heavy it is to drive I'm sticking with the Beemer as the daily driver.

The 930 is great, she really is, and she brings a smile to my face just sitting in it let alone driving down the road. As with my previous cars when I like a car so much it certainly gets the pampered treatment. By the time I have finished everything will be back in full working order.

Cheers,
Chris

You're right sbout a heavy drive, although of course the later models have assisted breaking and clutch.

I agree not a daily drive but for me, being 6'4, its the driving position that is the problem, which makes the 996 and 997 more tempting. I use a BM as a daily drive but am getting to the point where I can almost justify replacing both with something newer.

Love the look of the 930 though and one can feel it really plant on the road once one starts really motoring. I'm not a really experienced driver but believe I can feel the lightness at the front ( a bit disconserting at speed) and the tendency to oversteer on lift off is there at speed.

Mine hasn't moved much recently and I ought to sell it. However it remains a pleasure just to look at.

Oh, and a squeeky blower when the climate is on is the remaining fault on mine.

If your car is a '89 model it should have the G50/50 which is a 5 speed and is a different gearbox to the ealier 930's. I have only a G50/01 which has been fitted to my 930 but that is so much better to use than the old 915 based boxes.

Hello,

Another update on my 930!

I have finally managed to sort out my drivers mirror which wasnt working. Well, it wasnt the mirror itself as I tested that at work and all was fine. After using the 1986-88 Carrera electrical prints for the mirror I worked out that the only difference for the 1985 Turbo (mine at least) appeared to be a change of colour on one of the motor feed wires (namely blue on print but black/yellow on car inner wing to door mirror).

The problem was with the black/yellow wire in pin 2 of the mirror loom from inner wing to mirror itself. The only way to get to it physically is through the door trim etc. So, that lot came off quick and I discovered that some wires had been connected with inline crimps, quite badly I might add to the point that two wires had pulled out (1 black/yellow and one white). The "dodgy" wiring was resoldered together along with a few others and all covered with individual heatshrinks. Job done at the mirror is now working again : FIXED

Onto some heater pipes beneath the dash I guess now. Have to put all the stuff for the previosu jobs back together first!

Can someone let me how the cigarette tray light is fitted. Is the light held in place as mine is dangling to the side of it right now. I dont see how it can "stay" in place at all.

More updates soon........

Chris
