'94 993 chip and remap??

robbies

New member
Forgive me if I mess this up - I am, to coin a popular retailer's phrase, a 911 Virgin. And a Forum Virgin to boot...

Anyway, is there anyone out there who can advise me on the efficacy of "Chipping and Remapping" my 1994 993 Tiptronic? I love the car but would dearly like the power to come in earlier than the current mark of around 4500 rpm. I had been recommended a chip-chap (!) called Wayne Schofield of Chip Wizard nr Manchester by Jaz, specialists in Wembley, who thought he was the Mut's Nuts.... But I cancelled my appointment as it was just before we moved down to Devon.

Is there someone locally who is experienced and knowledgeable in the matter? What does it cost and does it make a tangible difference to performance/fuel consumption (for better or worse) etc...?

Also, what wheel/suspension changes do you recommend for my car? I am currently still running on the original 16" rims and as far as I know no changes have been made by my successors to the set up. It runs very smoothly in a straight line but at speed gets a bit spongey, and drifts a bit, and in corners it is less precise and flat than perhaps it could be. Ideas?

Any help gratefully received.Thanks,

Robbies

Robbies,

Would second what Maurice said re suspension. The HD's transform the ride and handling of the car. Got it done about 18 months ago and have never regreted it.

From what you have said your dampers are defo knackered.

I'm having my car remapped by Wayne the week after next. I'll let you know how I get on.

I'm really dreading the drive up there from London tho, but I'm hopeful it will be worth it.

Thanks for letting me know, mbrands (?). I've no doubt that, if he's as good as a previous respondent says, it will be well worth it and the return journey will be a breeze! Let me know how it goes (literally). Is your car a 993?

On a different and more trivial note, how do you get your ID to show that you are a member of the PCGB? Mine persists in telling everyone that I am posting as a non-member when in fact I am a member; I've checked my profile but nothing changes on this site. Help!

Thanks for this, Maurice. Yes, sorry it's taken me so long to get going here - a wretched performance from the New Boy - but I'm here now! Even at a fiver I'll bow to my better judgement and your greater experience and decline the bet (tho' any winnings would at least make a small dent in a tank of decent gas...) and will visit Andy Moss to let him give me the bad news..!
Thanks to you and others for your help.
Best, Robbies

Only because it's 200+ miles up the motorway on a Monday morning, and then the same distance back again in the evening.

I don't think the drive will be that much fun to be honest. Knowing how the roads can get sometimes, I have a feeling traffic will either be very heavy, or moderately heavy, but with everyone frustratingly plodding along in the outside lane regardless. [] Apart from that, it's ok I suppose...[&:]

Robbies,

Wayne remapped my varioram 993 a month ago. Apart from his time keeping I couldnd't speak highly enough of him. Spends a long time getting it just right because anything less isn't in his vocabulary.

As documented on an earlier thread I posted he rectified a varioram problem that he identified, realised the OPC had switched ignition leads on my spark plugs ensuring that 2 cylinders only had one spark plug actually sparking and then took the figures of 278bhp and 260lbft of torque up to 305bhp and 282lbft respectively. £411 the lot!

The car now pulls like a train in any gear and runs at the red line like a scaldered cat.

It's a hell of a drive for you but I am sure you wont regret it.

All true, Marc, probably - but bear in mind, if all else fails, that 99% of all the other poor souls who are stationary in Monday morning/evening traffic are not in a F-off-gorgeous-993-varioram with a remapped engine and have nothing to look forward to at the week-end....[:)] Robbie

ha ha like that one Robbie - "f-off-gorgeous993-varioram-remapped" absolutely bang on. In fact I'm gonna go and get mine out right now! [:D]

Anybody got the contact details for Wayne......defo sounds like the chap to trust........and will obviously worth the 200 miles +....for the work!!!!

Maurice, hi -

I'm still on this quest for info about re-jigging my 993 as posted some time ago. Thanks to all for your responses, by the way.

But can you enlighten me further? There has been much encouragement from everyone here, especially those who have been to Wayne Schofield, but I have been reading equally enthusiastic feedback about Steve Wong's (Californian) Chips. If I've understood all this correctly it seems that replacing the chip is much simpler than spending hours at Wayne's place while he hooks the car up to his PC to remap it, and with much the same results. And it's instantly reversible. Am I mistaken?

Thanks again,

Robbies

Hi,

I thought Steve Wongs chips were targetted at 3.2's? Does he do 993 ones also?

As I understand it he burns a chip to your general car spec - standard / modded exhaust etc, and then you replace it in your car and have the car dynoed to see the results, especially the lamda (fuel mixture) output.

You can then send him the results and he will burn another chip if he feels that there is more to come - you then repeat the process with the dyno to test the results

Wayne does the work live, on your car, and adjusts the ignition timing and fuelling specifically to match the setup of your engine, which would allow for compensation for wear etc, and can also test for other issues (non working varioram and cross wired spark plugs are a couple of the things he has found). The changes he makes are immediately comparible with the previous dyno run, and so should be more accurate, ie no air temp / pressure differences between the runs

In the end you pays your money and take your chances

Cheers

Pete

I just had my car done by Wayne last Monday. Very pleased with the result. Went from 268.5 bhp (V-ram with a resonance flap issue) to 304.3 bhp.

Torque up 19 lb-ft from 265.5 to 284.3.

Wayne spent a good 3-4 hours on the car. He takes his time and does not rush anything. Nice guy too. I can highly recommend. And as mentioned elsewhere, the mapping is tailored to your specific car, which logically should be incrementally better than using an off the shelf chip.

The difference is very noticable above 3000-4000 rpm when the power really starts to surge (especially given that my car was almost 17bhp short on power to start with). The increase in low end grunt is there, but not as obvious as the gain further up the rev range.

Somehow, the more I drive it the more I notice/ appreciate the gains. The only bad thing is that next you start to wonder what the car would be like with maybe a 3.8L engine upgrade or the new ninemeister heads...not good.
