944 Brake Surveys?

Hi guys has there been a Brake survey to decide which are the most popular brakes on 944's?

I ask cos I am going to have to bite the bullet soon and put a full set of discs and pads on, but don't know which. It is at the moment, purely a low mileage road car, so none of that ceramic rubbish that take ages to warm up, i will be in a hedge by the time they are working properly.
 
I have standard Pagid(?) pad on my cab and I used to use EBC Greens on the Turbo. The greens are no better than standard IMO but they create fine white dust rather than black so your wheels stay looking cleaner.

Once I've toasted the Greens I will be reviewing what to replace them with - Big Reds to hold whatever I go for I hope...
 
Rich, you have the really big 928 S4 callipers fitted on your Turbo SE so they are more than up to the job in my opinion. I use Zimmerman disks and Pagid pads that I get from whatever OEM supplier has the best price at the time, normally Bert Gear at Berlyn Services but sometimes German and Swedish car parts.

I find this setup great on track so you should have no problems on the road. The only problem with these callipers are the well documented plates that lift with corrosion and then squeeze the pad, reducing its effectiveness. 911 & P world did an article on home refurbishment but most independant specialists charge around ÂŁ75 a calliper
 
In the winter i will be giving my brakes a service, replacing the slides and fitting Pagid Blues and replacing fluid with ATE super Blue fluid (exeptional) . For road driving well serviced brakes with standard disks an Pagid Blues are a great combo, for track then drilled disks and Pagid Orange are prob a good combo.

The Pagida are not chep, you are looking at about ÂŁ300-ÂŁ340 for F & R set.

Disks arent too dear about ÂŁ50 for standard and about ÂŁ100 for drilled ones.

The most important thing is that the brakes are well serviced and no corrosion on the slides etc.

I use zimmerman discs (worth painting the centres with zinc rich paint or they rust), standard calipers, green stuff (initially front only now front and rear), similar performance to standard (possibly slightly better), Halfords DOT 5.1 brake fluid, and since Silverstone last year (running slicks and thin pads) I have added some ducting. Most of the later cars (90 on) don't have the duct through the front wheel arch liner.

Kevin I can scan the article for you next week (I'm a bit tied up for the next few days) but basically the brake pads slide back and forwards on stainless steel plates within the calliper. The calliper itself is light alloy and without the plates the pads would wear the alloy away. Unfortunately, over time, corrosion builds up between the plate and the calliper and it lifts the plate away from the alloy. This in turn squeezes the pads and restricts their movement, eventually seizing. The article shows how to remove the plates, clean underneath and then replace.

I need to do my Turbo fronts and S2 rears this year. A tell tale indicator that your plates have lifted is if you need to use a lot of force to remove the pads. You should be able to pull them out by hand. A temporary fix is to grind down your brake pads a little. I think this 'may' be a false economy as now the plates have even more room to be bent into
 
Paul, can you mail Slim a copy too? I promised him I'd do the same but I loaned a pile of 911&PW mags to a mate who fancies a Turbo Cab, apparently including that one, and I haven't seen him to get them back yet.
 
No probs, don't hold your breath though, and do remind me if you see nothing by next week. I am becoming a mite forgetful.......
