944 Estate

I agree the spoiler thing is not a benefit to the looks. It's hard to be sure from the pics, but I suspect it's there because the angle of the rear section is closer to vertical than the angle of the panel with the lock and model designation on it and the spoiler is needed to try to hide the mismatch. In other words there wouldn't be an unbroken line from above the numberplate to the roof line, and that would (hard to believe I know) look even worse than the spoiler.

I agree the 944 looks less bad than the 968 but I suspect that is more to do with the colour of the car and more flattering photography than any real difference in how ugly the conversion is between the models.

The side-on view must be outright hideous.

944 estates have been mentioned on here a couple of times. I think a few companies have made them at various stages - I recall reading that one such company used a VW Passat roof, which was the right dimensions and fitted straight on. This was combined with a fibreglass skin on a frame to form the back.

I happen to really like them as well. Although I seem to remember some people on here questioning my judgement for saying so. If it could be made to handle like the coupe, with a similar weight distribution and as much chassis stiffness, then surely you are onto a winner. Allegro comparisons are immaterial - the concept is great, and given that I use my S2 as an only car, a bit more practicality would often be welcomed. Snag is that to have the conversion done on a car now would be absurd - the cost of the work would significantly exceed the cost of the car, and it would be pretty much worthless once finished.

I'll keep an open mind on that Strosek thing. The pictures aren't flattering, but I would like to see one in the tin before I judge. Not that that is ever likely to happen, I know! I presume that the only glass on it is the letter-box rear window, and the sides and top are opaque, body-colour fibreglass?

Oli.
