944 Estates? (Shooting Brakes)

Love the 944 "Avant", I recall they were modified using the rear roof section of a Passat Estate. Just memory - no details.

BMW "M" Engines, what are they made of ?

I appreciate the balance and lightness of the 944's powerful, compact, lightweight (sound like porsche trademarks) power plant, as opposed to a jumped-up Cortina. The reason M's are good drifters is because they are badly balanced. Cortinas were good drifters too.[:D]

Fen - good to hear you. The RB5 was a car I really liked, but my only Fuji was a 1981 Pickup.

They're the best type. Anyway have you seen the new Impreza? That should pretty much kill Subaru stone dead in the UK at least.
Looks like a Mazda 3 that has crashed through the window of halfords,

but probably less well made!

Still has the moronic bonnet scope, haven't they heard of front mounted IC's? Some companies are just so slow and backward it is hard to have much of a car for them.

My feelings on the Impreza are well known on here - and they are based on owning an RB5. Given people (including Evo) still bleat on about them being the best Impreza ever I think I can speak with authority when I say they are overrated jumped up mini-cabs. I'll stop there I think though I have a set-piece of fault list I can reel off.

Too right... They are a total bucket of jap junk....! And to top it off all the scallys about here drive 1.6 Imprezas tarted up to look like WRX's [:D]

I always fancied this but didnt have the cash at the time..........[&o]

When this thread came up before the Allegro Estate was mooted as a dead ringer from the rear.....[8|]
Oli I have a spare Porsche lozenge steering wheel that I can bash into an Allegro square if you like [:D]
Lovely, thanks chaps!

Now all I have to do is find aforementioned allegro and work out how to get the classic 944 front-engine, rear-gearbox configuration... (here I wonder if simply putting a spare gearbox in the boot would be considered cheating. After all it would then have met the criteria, albeit with two gearboxes ... )

Never seen one of those before ... another one to add to the scrapbook. Thanks.

Chris_911, what's Excellence magazine?

Oli.

Excellence is a US independent Porsche mag. I had a subscription back in the day as some of it is quite interesting and they don't have the same modern & 911 bias as some of the UK mags seem to. It's very American in format though.

the 944 estate looks too much like one of these for my liking -

nice to have you back Fen - not been much Impreza-bashing around here recently!

My favourite Porsche Magazine [:)]

If you subscribe it's dirt cheap too [8D]

Guys,

Thanks. I'll look out for Excellence - I'm on London so there is a Borders on Oxford Street.

Poprock - that's nuttier than the snickers bar I have just devoured. I quite like the wood decking around the edge ... well, actually, I don't - it looks awful, but it's an interesting touch!

Going back to whole 944 estate thing, once you'd spent your £15K (when converted at a more realistic rate) plus your donor car, I'm afraid the result would be worth about 2p, and thats if you could find anyone to buy it.

I'm a keep it as the factory intended kinda guy [8D][8D]
