944 newbie

See I always preferred Helios blue...

That said I do like Lhasa green and I also like Oak green on the Mk2, though again I'd go for Windsor blue in preference.

Ah, now Helios was much more rare, and only featured on Campaign models. Lhasa was on non-campaigns as well.

I never quite took to Helios. Some cars with it on looked really fantastic. Some looked less good. Not sure why.

I do know that Helios was fairly common on Mk2's, and really looked nothing more than very ordinary on them.

Love of colours is perhaps very affected by your first experiences of them. Had my first car been a Helios Blue example, I'd probably be as keen on it as I am on Lhasa Green.

Possibly. My only Mk1 was a Campaign in silver with a TSR 1.9 and copious amounts of weird reddish brown stuff along the door bottoms.

My Mk2s were Monaco and Windsor blue (the Mk1 came in between them and the one I liked best was th last - Windsor)

The perrenial downfall of Mk1 Golfs - rust!

I fitted a Mk 2 16v engine to my first GTi (and wrote it up in detail for Rabbit - the CGTi magazine) and felt it ruined the car. Really spoiled it. The standard 8v 1800 was a very good engine. Having said that, the very first 1600 8v engine was possibly a sweeter unit. A real, real rev-monster. Not anywhere near as quick as the 1800, but much more fun to drive. I never owned one, but loved every one of them that I drove ...

My passion was Mk1's, but the only Mk2 I owned (very late 8v) was probably the better car. Exceptionally well built, much more mature, and no sign of rust. I grudgingly admit that while the Mk1 was much more fun to drive, it was a bit too fragile for daily use.

Don't get me started on Mk3's. (OK, you just have. I owned one. The worst car I ever had. The fiancee loved it so I bought it. Then I married her and sold the car, to buy another Mk1!)

The MkIII was a horrid, overweight bloated thing. All the senses had been dulled by the lard. The MkI 1.8, 1984 would be perfect for me. Never had a MkII, but remember being very envious of a Helios 16-valver down the road. 16v sounded sooo cool....[:)]

When I bought my S2, it was a choice between a 944 and Mk1 GTi.

While the S2 is a great car, I'm not utterly convinced that I made the right choice ...

I'd have a mint Mk1 Campaign in a second - in any of the colours available except perhaps Tornado pink. I'd like to drive a 1.6 to see what all the fuss is about.

In reality it's on the same list as the Mk1 Escort, 105E Anglia, Ur quattro plus many others in that I don't want one enough to actually pay the money they now command / I can't be bothered enough to look for a decent one / I don't have anywhere to keep one / I don't have any use for one.

/ your're going to NZ any day now so can't buy one in the UK anyway ...

Mk1's never came in Tornado Red, which is the one that fades. They were Mars Red, which is slightly more orange-y to start with and never faded anywhere near as badly. (The reason Tornado Red got a bad reputation was that VW were experimenting with water-based paints at that time, and it was - frankly - rubbish. Earler and later models in other reds were much more UV-stable. Also the water-based paints were poor at protecting corrosion when damaged, which is why stoneships on tornado red Mk2's almost always have associated cilliform corrosion.)

UR-quatt. Ah now one of those WILL make it into my garage one day. Soon, I'd like to think.

My word Mark, these 944 guys can go even more off-topic then us at the Dark Side [;)] [:D] (evil laughter)

Anyhow, Helen Goff's old 944 S2 with a completely rebuild engine from Zentrum in Notts will soon be on the market. Owned by the 964 RS/ 996 GT3MkI driving chap called Jason. It was bought for "a good price" and I presume it might go "for an equally good price". Red on black leather.

I think you'll find off topic was invented here [:D][:D]

I forgot it was Mars on the Mk1. Still don't like it though. I once heard that Tornado and Guards pink are one and the same.

Mk1 sciroccos are my bag. Rust is the big issue with them as well. I only went S2 when I weighed up the impending costs of a rebuild. Now i'm ex S2, plus baby & plus A4 avant, I'm looking for another Mk1 'rocco.

Congratulations on your purchase, and welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you may have got a bit of a bargain there.

I'm not sure if the wings are any different between the 2.5 and the turbo, but side skirts are a common modification. I'd strongly suggest you have a look underneath them to check the condition of the sills.

As far as i'm aware, you can't easilly repair the dash, but you can buy covers that improve the appearance.

Also, make sure you get the timing and cam belts changed!

I'm looking forward to seeing photos[:)]

Turbo/S2 wings are different from the Lux models, sounds like a nice little project there...............enjoy it will keep you busy but make you smile when it is going well.....promise !

'85 can be square or oval!

S2 Turbo wings have the little angle at the front - you can see it in my pic...Robs avatar[:D]

Ah Mike you are correct being a newbie I will forgive him for not stating 85.5 or 85 and kick myself in the arse. And yes I did steal your pic from Rutland for my avatar it was very good and summed my car up in one pic I think. Good work fella [;)]

Was there a guy on here before with a car that hadn't run for a while with the S2 front? did some work and then was selling it as didn't have time to complete? A search may bring up some info - welcome by the way!

Thanks for the welcome all. Definately not them. It has been standing since 2006, but I would say its an '85 as it has the square dash.

Was supposed to go and collect it today, but the bearings have gone in the trailer I hired for the day. Grrrrr...... Gutted, but these things happen. I'm sure the car will frustrate me more than this little incident.

Thanks

Andy
