I don't know how other 944 owners feel about the power steering but on the three I've owned I find the best way to drive them is to have a very loose fingertip control of the wheel and let the car steer itself. It has strong self-centering and is much easier to drive that way. If you try to 'steer' the car with a firm grip on the wheel it will fight you and you'll find it a tiring experience.
These cars are not your typical agile 'sports cars' in my opinion but more a 'Grand tourer' and as such need to be assessed in that catagorie. If you're looking for a quick agile chuck around sports car maybe you should look at a MX5 or an Exige [
