944 S - information

It sounds great, although I prefer the Pasha myself... I remember when I was about 16, our cricket club captain had a 924 turbo with the psychedelic interior. That car fely like a rocket ship compared with my dad's Morris Ital [:D]

I'd love to own a 924S again - they are a better car to drive on most roads than the 944 turbo (until you flex your right foot a bit [;)]) What I really need is 5 or 6 garages - particularly now, as the price of cars is plummeting. You can pick up an E46 M3 for under 10K, which sounds like a bargain to me.
 
I've been pondering about getting another car to add to the stable too given the daft bargains that are out there at present, but its not so much the buying as the cost of maintaining that gives me pause. Don't really want to get rid of the 944 to get something else though as I know I would miss it hugely when it had gone.
 
so... I took the 944S out for a spin. Quite nice. It did feel a bit sluggish in the lower gears to be honest, and then would suddenly surge considerably 4K+. Looked beautiul in black, naturally, and only minor stone chipping. Central locking needs fixing and there was a clunking, which are the CV joints needing changing. Also, it got very hot inside the car which my Porsche specialist friend, Ian at Porschmode, said would perhaps be the heating system going wrong which he says is really quite a common problem.

Not convinced about the vehicle.

If I am honest it didn't drive as nicely at all as the 924S which was a tight drive.

 
There's your answer then...

buy the 24, spend some time getting to know the car, & then if you want to buy a 44, you'll know a bit more about what you're looking for, and you can sell the 924.

I can't see you losing money on a 1200 924S if it's in good shape.
 
Certainly does look like a good plan on paper. I was v. impressed with it.

(and a friend of mine is in the respray trade too so black could be an option... the slippery slope)

BTW - does anyone have "road noise' issues with 944s?
 
[;)]I have had a 944S and currently drive a 924S, I personally think the 924S is a better car, its lightweight and more nimble than the 944S, but please dont let that put you off. The 924S is easier to look after than the 944S, I can tell from experience. As for road noises there will be more from the 944S as it is a wider car than the 924S.

Please check the last time the head gasket was changed and the chain that controls both cams. They should be replaced at the same time and have a shelf life of approx ten years. For the small oil pipe that is underneath the chain, they changed the design so that it is stonger and will not break it will cost you approx £60 from an OPC.

Thanks very much. I'm guessing the 924S may be a fraction more economical on fuel due to it's weight? I was never after a 944S, always a cool black lux, but this one just came up locally.

Will ask Ian tomorrow about the headgasket and chain.
 
Another advantage - 924S is just single cam - no chain to worry about. You do need to budget for a belts / rollers/oil seals / water pump service if it hasn't been done in the last 3 years (same as any front engined Porsche really)

There is more road noise in my 944 turbo - mainly because of the wider tyres I think. The 924S gearboxes were more noisy - can't hear my 944 one at all.

DF: I think you should probably drive an 8v 944; you don't have to have either of the two cars you've looked at thus far and the heaviness of the 944S may actually be a lot to do with the low-down torque of the 8v engine.

I'm not going to try to put you off the 924S because of what it is as it's a good car in its own right and it does make a lot of sense to consider one for the reasons given above, but make sure you are happy with the aesthetics of the colour combo, slim body and old style dash.
 
Surprisingly, the 944S will probably have the advantage, due to its superior Motronic M2.1 ECU (similar to the S2 and the 968).
 
What you should do is drive a 924S and then drive a 944 or a 944S and see what you think. Perhaps you should go for a 1985 oval dash 944 2.5 8v car in black. One will turn up for sale. Just wait and the right one will come up for sale. If you need any help looking at one I'll be more than happy to help.
 
Hi fellers, interesting thread never driven a 924s myself but love my black 944s[:D]
did lose the engine last year when the cam chain broke[:mad:] common problem as I found out everything changed over the years and miles apart from chain!!
