944 S Suspension upgrade advice?

GAZ tubes are extremely susceptible to corrosion too. One salty winter makes them look like theyre 10+ years old.

And my KW's still look shiny & new - 5 years on...

Perhaps both more suited to race / track applications though. Add import duty onto both of those prices as well...

I'd go KW for a few hundred more, or probably better, save my money & get the m030's rebuilt. Torsion bar delete adds lots of extra labour cost for limited benefit.

It seems many have pondered over suspension in the past. Here are some thoughts from chaps who seemed to have tried most setups on a 944 :). There is loads of information present here as well:

These seem mighty tempting for the money:

Bilstein B6s

These would be okay on an 89 Turbo, right?

Russ

As long as you do not have M030, then yes it should fit fine AFAIK :). At that price it does look very tempting!

A friend of mine with a daily driven MGB with a Gaz Damper conversion did actually key his dampers and lacquer them It seems 2 years on that they are standing up OK to the test of time. Can you not get them in the black finish for not much more?

Chaz,
How much modification would be needed on an M030 car to fit those Bilsteins, because that's what I have? I'm trying to compare M030 rebuild (approx. £150 per corner at best guess) with these.

Russ

Maybe I am wrong here (I shall wait for someone who has rebuilt a set of M030s to reply), your only real choice with M030s is to get them rebuilt by Koni if you wish to keep them. AFAIK, the later Turbos did not always come with M030 suspension, hence my suggestion :). Indeed, my car has no mention of M030 on the build sticker.

Good thread you linked to Chas.

Those bilsteins also look a good deal. I'm assuming the fronts are inserts?

Not sure, Hallsy.

Give Design911 a call to find out?

Chas,
I think you're right. Shame, as I do like Billies and they are a very good deal.

For those interested in the B6 set up I got my quote back from CG :p

(I am not sure on the rules on posting this but the below is what would be involved so posting for information purposes only and I am sure if anyone is interested it may be of use)

The B6 package with full fitting and fettling comes in at about 1500 quid.

To me that sounds like jolly good value if you are not too sure on doing the work yourself. The list of work is extensive as below.

 Test drive and report
 Inspect all suspension systems and components including dampers, springs, bushes and balljoints
 Remove existing dampers
 Dismantle springs and top mounts from existing dampers
 Rebuild Bilstein B6 dampers with original springs and top mounts
 Re fit
 Pre load car with weight
 Tyre data check and adjust
 Ride height check and adjust
 Including Torsion bar adjust
 Corner weight check and adjust
 Geometry check and adjust (optimise for A/B road use)
 Re check corner weights
 Customer test drive check and handover
 Before and after tyre, ride height and corner weight report
 Before and after geometry check and report

Certainly don't think it would disappoint someone looking for a refresh. Now have to convince myself it is the right thing to do!

Cheers,
Charlie

OK interesting,

What am I missing then? I think they rebuild them from scratch with the B6 inserts?

Suspension not my strong point at all as you can probably tell. [:D]

That suggests to me that they take the springs and top mounts off the old struts and fit them to the new "struts"...

it doesn't say
remove cap from strut
remove old insert
drain oil & clean
machine thread around top of strut
assemble with new insert and cap

that to me sounds like very good value for money. I'd hazard a guess that at the end of all that it will be one very sorted 944. However I'd want to allow a bit extra to cover any bushings and the like that needed sorting. However, it's a toy isn't it? so no point in stinting on it! Make it the best toy it can be...
