944 Scottish Tour 2005

I mentioned in my last RS 's column that I am looking into the feasibility of a Scottish Tour for the 944 Register in 2005.

After working through the logistics with Paul Smith, the following format is what we're aiming for.

Dates: Saturday 28th May to Tuesday 31st May, with possibility for extension.

Location: Centred (probably) in the Perth area, subject to availability of accommodation:

Accommodation: We are going for a mansion-style large house that will accommodate about 16 people in 8 twin/double rooms. This would be booked on an exclusive basis, i.e. just us there at that time. It will be self-catering - though the option for catered meals exists at extra cost.

We are limited by constraints on accommodation to a maximum of 16 people, although this is slightly flexible depending on how we arrange the accommodation. It is probably not feasible to conduct the event with fewer than 12 people attending.

There is limited availability of single rooms which would be charged pro rata.

Activities: I will be aiming to do three day-long drives that will take in a variety of roads and attractions. This is not primarily a driving event, but there will be a day or two where you'll be able to cover some bigger mileages (maybe upwards of 200 miles) on roads chosen for their interest to the driver and general scenic-ness.

Costs: For the house, it's likely to be approximately £450 per two persons for the 3 nights. Meals etc will be extra depending on what you prefer - there is a fully-equipped kitchen at all of the locations we're considering.

I would need an immediate deposit of one third of the price (i.e. £150) to secure the accommodation.

Depending on the numbers interested, I may be able to extend this to take in two groups - one staying from Saturday to Tuesday morning, and one from Tuesday afternoon until Saturday morning.

This trip is open to PCGB members only.

If you would like to go, please e-mail me at nfearn@saratoga.co.uk confirming

i) your interest
ii) Number of people in your "group"
iii) that you will forward me a cheque for £150 per two persons for the deposit. No cheques will be cashed until the booking is firm and the event confirmed. However, once the booking is made the deposit is non-refundable unless I can "sell" your places to someone else.
iii) whether, in the event that we don't get 16 people interested but only 12, you'd be prepared to pay approximately £600 for the accommodation.

Please note that I need confirmed interests rather than "possibles" at this stage as the accommodation needs to be booked sooner rather than later.

Please call me on 07714 672077 if you have any questions concerning the above.

regards
Nick Fearn

I should have added that if we get 16 couples or 32 people or so in total, the price will be about £225 per two people per three nights. Anything over 16 people and below 32 and the price will vary pro rata.

If we don't get sufficient numbers from the 944 Register, I will throw it open to other registers, probably starting with the 968 and 924 ones.

We have six couples who are interested now, so there are places for two couples / four singles remaining.

Any takers?

The accommodation, which is now booked, is here: http://www.lhhscotland.com/Mansion99.asp

We have six couples who are interested now,

Wow that was quick [:D] It shows you howe much better an online forum is for communicating club news compared to the snail mail magazine. That house looks so much better than the ones we looked at. I found a great website for hiring scottish castles http://www.celticcastles.com/ but most of the the prices were just too scarey for a few days []

bump - 'cos it woud be good to get some more 944's on the trip before opening it to anyone else.

Obviously 968's are only facelifted 944's so they would be in without a problem and 924's are prototype 944's so the same applies [:D]

I think this will be in print for the first time in the February Porsche Post so a wider audience will see it. We online wise guys will have a had a 6 week headstart due to the wonders of modern technology [:D]

Belinda and Peter will be flying up (and back), that way I can enjoy the drive and they don't complain about being in the car for eight hours.

Flights from Stans Shed to Edinburgh are very cheap, if you book them well in advance, so my Team will arrive on Sunday morning giving me all Saturday to play. [:)]

Thought I'd post the details of the Scottish trip below in case we have any new forum members who missed the original.

Details are now pretty much finalised and I'm looking for takers for the last three places - we have room for three more couples or six singles, depending on how flexible you are with accommodation[;)]

Sign up now - this promises to be a really memorable trip.

Dates: Saturday 28th May to Saturday 4th June.

Location: Newmiln House, near Perth

Accommodation: Newmiln House is a mansion-style house that will accommodate about 18 people in 8 twin/double rooms, with a few single rooms over. This has been booked on an exclusive basis, i.e. just us there at that time. It will be self-catering - though the option for catered meals exists at extra cost.

the scottish one (Mags) as translator

A much needed member of the team. I've been in the land of the haggis (and thick air) once a week for the last six months and still haven't a clue what they are saying 50% of the time.

Does the other 50% make sense ? [:D][:D][:D]

Talking to Mr Fern last night I am getting very excited about the event.

Nick has obviously put a lot of effort into the organisation - we are all going to have Road Books with routes, places to visit and the like.

As some of you may know Nick is involved with the HPC (High Performance Club), among other respected advanced driving organisations, so knows what he is doing. I have every confidence that we will be driving some of the best roads available. I further understand that Nick will be willing to offer driving advice (if requested) to those in the party, the like of which would cost you dearly otherwise.

With the current group I have every confidence that we will have a great time, but we do have a couple of places left.

After all the effort that has gone into this event it would be unfortunate if it weren't fully subscribed so what about joining in if you haven't already booked?

I was toying with the idea of grabbing SlimBoyFat / 944S2 and coming to join you guys on one of the runs, but I'm out of the country that weekend. []

Based in (or around Perth) you right beside the famous A93 road to Braemar. Possibly already on you're route..... you have to take it as far as Braemar at least.

First 20 miles or so are not too wide, twisting and sinuous. Lots of height changes.

Opens up to big glacial valley (towards ski-slopes). Wide road with mile+ sight lines.

Truly awesome road (and scenery). [8D]

Seconded, Nick Fearn has 'assessed' my driving (without being too rude [;)] ) and is able to pass on his vast knowledge of advance driving techniques. He encourages a safe and smooth technique whilst making 'good progress' when the circumstances allow.

Scotland has some great roads and scenery, we have some great cars can't wait to put them together again[:)]

It does sound like quite a trip and I'm sure I'm going to be jealous of you all when you're on here with the stories of it all but I'd have to do it in my 306, my wife probably wouldn't enjoy all the car talk and we've already got a week in France booked soon after it. On top of that the cost is not insignificant and I am haemorrhaging money into my car like there's no tomorrow just now.

I've just read on the interweb that the A93 is also (apparently) the highest road in the UK (?)

All the more reason to take a run up it [8D]
