944 Silverstone Track Evening 18th July

ORIGINAL: John Sims

Paul Smith________Turbo - Can't quite muster 300 bhp.

Oi Sims!!!! I didn't spot that addition [:D]

It's looking like I will be there because it's looking like I'll be out of work [:(] so I'll have no trouble getting the night off

Good news is that the payoff will be attactive enough to ensure comfortably over 300bhp. See, every cloud does have a silver lining, and if the silver lining is actually platinum and has a quick spool up option then even better.

By the way - gizza job []

That's bad news Paul, I'm glad you are positive about it though, or is it voluntary?

I'm not sure exactly what you do but the market is reasonably strong again now I'm told.

Paul, commiserations. All the best in the job hunting as well.

Rick has put the photos up from last night at Silverstone-- he does a really great job for us all.

Good news Tony - I have moved you to confirmed on the list. [:)]

I'm sweating a bit as Beaky is going in for an MOT on the Saturday. If he fails I wont be out to play. I understand that Baby WUF isn't ready yet either. I guess I'll still have to come along either way. Perhaps Rick and I could go shed racing instead. [&:]

Bit of a busy week next week with a new windscreen on Monday, Essex BBQ Tuesday, MAP being re-calibrated by Thor Racing on Friday, MOT Saturday, Walton Hall Sunday, Track Day Monday. I wonder when I'll have time to clean him, or indeed fit in any work to pay for it all. []

Assuming Beaky is legal I can't decide whether to run the track wheels or not. My road fronts are on their way out and I hate the rear tyres, so perhaps it would be a good way to kiss them goodbye. I hate changing wheels and I don't think the 928 dish wheels give enough air flow to the brakes any way.

Hmm, MTTS engine going in tomorrow then we just have to make a wiring loom for the engine management, make up some plumbing for a few non-standard bits like BOV, catch can etc. get it running, mount the track tyres on the track rims, get the PU refitted and the rear spoiler attached with more than Duck tape, set the ride heights then fit the rear coilovers and cornerweight it, fit the ARBs, get the alignment done, fit the passenger seat, get an MoT and tax, do some mapping runs (it will map itself pretty well using the software the ECU comes with and the wideband O2 sensor), run it in, fix any minor niggles and put a base setup on the ARBs and bump/rebound. Not too much left to do then...

See you at the Christmas track day then, Fen [:D][:D][:D]

I'll give you ring in the next few days to see how the project's going.

I'm dealing with all the teething problems of installing the Wolf-3d and getting it working correctly before progressing to working properly with the wideband etc.

Looking at going fully sequential injection and ignition soon ...

We must really love these cars !! [:)][:)]

[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I guess we must, otherwise we'd just burn ÂŁ50 notes - it would be quicker and easier.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Sorry to hear the Wolf 3d hasn't worked out well so far. With the amount of trouble you (and Ben) have had I'm desperately hoping that the slow but steady progress on mine can continue and that hopefully the management problems we have will be resticted to connecting it up - that will be enough trouble in itself.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]One thing I have learned is that "direct bolt-on" means that there is a bit of fiddling to get it to work to the point I am not convinced that there as a hell of a lot more work in getting stuff that was never intended for the car to fit.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Anyway I'm going to spend tomorrow and Saturday on the car (and Sunday too if I can get access to the workshop). Any calls of support probably very welcome.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

One thing I have learned is that "direct bolt-on" means that there is a bit of fiddling to get it to work to the point I am not convinced that there as a hell of a lot more work in getting stuff that was never intended for the car to fit.

So true. I would even go as far as to say "direct bolt-on" means it is unlikely to fit without a lot of fiddling.

At least with something not necessarily purported to fit you accept that you are going to have to develop a solution. In such cases you are prepared to spend time and money to get the thing working.
With a "bolt-on" product you expect to be able to remove the original and replace it with the new bit. Any additional time and money is then an annoyance.

Well I hope to see you all there, and to think I was just worried about finding time to order and fit new brake discs,
Tony

I have to say with the KW that it was a spot-on fit but that has far and away been the exception.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Anyway the engine is in the car! By that I mean it is in the mounts and connected to the torque tube. We had a little setback when an exhaust manifold stud sheared off when the headers were being tightened, but better it happened then than in a few months (it had been half cracked through looking at the colouring of the break). It's still touch and go but barring any big issues the car should be at Silverstone.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]What do you think of the lowered rear? It can come up a bit when we preload the coilovers.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Looks good to me. I'd leave it just as it is. [:)]

Well Beaky Phase I is successfully completed with new windscreen fitted. If all the other elements go as smoothly we should be OK for Silverstone. Like that's going to happen! []

Once booked please let me know so that we can modify the list at the top of this post.

I just have...........................so I`m letting you know [:)]

Silver rose spec 944 turbo

First time on track (for the car anyway) so its an unknown quantity to me at the mo.

See you all there.

John
I am now booked -- Melindi at Goldtrack has been away so not had time to check her e-mails for a few days. (Calum probably racing somwhere)

Good news Paul [:)]

There was a bit of a mix up with one of those on the booked list, but I understand there are two 944 S3s now booked, and also Martyn Molyneaux (R11 RO) in his 996, so that is at least 10 Porsches. [8D]

I'm not that familiar with the GP circuit but, for those that are, I have no doubt Martyn would value your comments - that's friendly and useful comments about the track not childish elitist rubbish about engines in the wrong place, RMS's and that sort of nonsense. [:'(] We'll just take all of that as read as, I have no doubt, Martyn has heard it all before.

Silverstone GP, great fun, pretty safe (large run offs to suit F1 speeds) apart from getting final entry to pit straight wrong and you're into outer barrier or pit wall [&:] and most corners are flat or negative camber

All personal comments . I`m sure others will add or comment accordingly.
