944 Track car project - parts needed please

ORIGINAL: 944 man

I have a polycarbonate glazed rear hatch, if youre interested? Its not on your list, but thats probably because you didnt think that youd be able to get one at a sensible price. [;)] I can also supply you with a set of polycarbonate or acrylic windows too. PC is stronger, but even Margard coated PC isnt as resistant to scratches as acrylic (Perspex), which is far stronger than glass and a good deal cheaper than polycarbonate.

Mine has seen a few hard seasons racing in the Open series. The polycarbonate wants a damned good polishing and, in order to comply with series rules, the PC has two longtitudinally mounted alloy reinforcing strips. I wish that Id fitted this one to my own car, instead of the alternative which doesnt have the reinforcing (which has since sagged in the sun...).....

The rest Id buy new for differing reasons. The wings and bonnet represent better value new and I wouldnt entertain used harnesses, seats, or roll cage. Safety Devices are certainly superior, but you can buy a new RollCentre rear for a little over £175: and thats a good deal less than a used SD rear can be found for.

Its interesting but not very well designed IMHO.

It has the pointless American style door bar setup on the drivers side for a start, but I have always assumed they do this to meet some standard design pattern. The tubes up the A pillars are not welded to the A pillar. I can't see if the header bar at the top of the screen is welded to the roof either, but maybe it is. The knee breaker bar is under the steering column it should be under the screen or none at all as its more likely to cause an injury then prevent one IMHO, and crash experience here in the UK suggests you just don't need one in a 944 anyway. For some reason there are no bars connecting the rear X to the main hoop lower down. Basically it looks like a design that will make the roof very strong in a roll over but isn't adding nearly enough stiffness to the car, maybe this is just to comply with SCCA rules or whatever I don't know.

There have been some huge crashes involving 944's racing here in the UK, as Alex pointed out above one of these was televised on Motors TV as it happened at the Silverstone classic the other year (ISTR 90 mph straight into the pit wall), another accident was a huge T-bone at some crazy speed, ISTR 120 mph impact. Both cars had body shells prepared by Kevin Eacock and in both cases the drives survived with relatively minor injuries.
