944 turbo oil pressure?

ORIGINAL: jayandrews

just read the handbook....... 4 bar at 5000 rpm and as low as 0.5 bar at idle. dont think there is anything wrong with mine then.......
I was just going to say that ... the handbook states that as low as 0.5 bar at hot idle is OK.

I've seen as low as 1 bar on my S2 (which will show lower presures than a turbo as there are more valves to run). That was after a long hard run on a stinking hot day, sitting in traffic with (I think) the exhaust pipe of the car in front just by the oil cooler of my car.

My old 944T used to drop to just over 2 bar (2.25'ish) when red hot after a few laps on track and then sitting idling in the paddock. That was run on Castrol Edge Sport 10/60W fully synthetic oil and had 136000 miles on the clock at the time.

There is quite a difference between warm/hot oil pressure and red hot oil pressure in my experience, so need to compare apples with apples!

I too pointed that out further up this thread, but it seems wisely everyone has learnt to ignore everything I type :ROFLMAO:

So you did.

Apologies.

All Hail Mr Empson! (He does have an S2 - kind of - so must be a knowledgable, decent sort!)

if you are concerrned about your oil pressure i suggest you buy a cheap halfrauds analogue oil pressure guage for £15.00 and a brass 'T' piece and install the guage somewhere in your system so you can get a truly accurate reading. The oil pressure guage in the 944 is very crude and hardly a reliable indication of pressure.I have heard that you can use an old style tyre air pressure guage for testing . I've used one to test my fuel pressure

Ji there, like the porsche people say 0.5bar at idle is perfectly ok,over the years I have seen people fret about oil pressure, remember when cars did not have gauges and you had to go and fit one only to worry yourself to death about the pressures you got. Its amazing how an engine with low pressure can run perfectly for years and when stripped there is no obvious fault, its when you have had certain pressures for years and then they drop you should worry,I would never have walked away from your car because of thos readings, all the best John.

That's a good point John, and I have heard similar said on many an occasion.

Generally oil pressure is not something to be worried about, unless it drops suddenly (i.e. while driving). Oil pressure gauges are things that people get very worried about, and it's unnecessary 99.9% of the time.

the pressure didnt bother me one bit but i have the car for sale and i believe that because my oil pressure was just above 2 bar when it had been left to idle for an hour whilst been looked over the guy didnt buy the car as he had been told it had to be 2.5-3 bar on idle.
i have used the car a bit this week and it seems to me to be between 2.25 bar and 3 bar on idle, more so towards the higher end. and as you have all said,on a 20 year old gauge that probably isnt 100% accurate anyway!
