944 turbo work done, is the bill OK?

dunc

New member
Just had some work done on my '87 944 turbo, I paid for labour only and I'm just trying to get an idea if I paid too much or not.

The work done was:-

Head gasket replaced, head tested and skimmed
Belts replaced including aux belts
Few pipes (and cycle valve) replaced that were in poor condition when he was in there
A throttle pedal replaced with new as well

Charged £625, so add the cost of parts (including extra pipes etc) onto that and it's £1k+.

Is this about right or should I avoid repeat business?

Cheers,

Dunc.

Sounds very reasonable by rates near me in the South East! Assuming it includes VAT, it's only about 8 hours work.

Doesnt sound bad to me at all, and Im known for getting good work done at very low prices. A head gasket too in the South East? Honestly surprised.

that sounds very fair to me!

just wondered, are you asking just out of interest, or do you suspect a problem?

The two specialists that i alternate between would have charged me a lot more. I'd be chuffed with that price.

Thanks for the feedback. I always do work myself but wanted the history stamped up in the instance so genuinely didn't know what to expect money wise.

There's more to do so I'm happy to put it back to there now.

In the mean time it's due an MOT soon and the hand brake is terrible so I'll do a search just now for common probs :)

Cheers,

Dunc

If you need a head removing skimming and replacing at any Porsche specialist I'd expect you to pay more than that without any other work at all. Keeping in mind a 'specialist' will be 80 or 90 plus vat an hour minimum, plus the head skim costs. I'll bet you'd be talking 1,000 plus at our well known specialists.

You sound like you've found a garage worth people using to me if the jobs good I'd defo use them !

Regards Mas

Thanks, taking it on a proper test run tonight - then the long commute to work for the rest of the week [:)]

All seems well, I've done a hundred and a bit miles and all the levels are still spot on. New problems which have appeared I think from it sitting around too much:-

1) Speedo dead, odometer still working
2) Throttle cable sticky
3) Boost gauge not working
4) Hand brake pretty crap

MOT on Friday afternoon - Welcome to 944 ownership [:D]

Dunc.

Edit: Also the heater confused me but I've read the manual now [8|]

If the odomenter works then it isnt the cable connector, so whilst I agree that its odd Im going to venture that it (the boost needle) is sticky too.

On a series two car, no, its more involved. You neednt remove the dashboard to remove the instrument binnacle though.

ORIGINAL: Ewan

I paid considerably more than that for a similar job at JMG...

Ewan, why do you keep slaughtering Jon? What he doesn't know about Porsche tuning you could fit on a postage stamp! I find JMG costs are well acceptable considering Jon's level of expertise. They also turn out first class work and they are always rushed off their feet! That must tell you something.

As someone who hasn't used JMG I didn 't think Ewan was making anything other than a factual statement based on his own experience. In fact, Ewan appears quite proud to knowledge his car is 'JMG Modified' in his signature. Maybe I am missing something here? [&:]

Woah! I'd be double checking all the work has actually been done at that price! [:D]

Dunc - from sxoc?? Thought I recognised your car list!

Sounds like a fair price to me - care to name the garage/specialist you used?

Instrument cluster is easy to remove on these.

Unclip horn from wheel and undo 24mm nut (don't rely on steering lock for leverage), remove three screws in top of cluster surround, two underneath and three from the central vents, then pull the trim forwards and out. Then remove four screws holding cluster in place, carefully pull the cluster forward enough to remove the three plugs on the back.

Hi Hallsy,

Recognised the name as well! It was a friend of my Dad's garage, he deals with classics etc but seems to have been careful - I've had a good look under the bonnet and all the components have been cleaned up and replaced where required (all new exhaust mani studs) plus it's running pretty well.

Cheers for the info regarding the dash removal everyone [:)] I've sourced the problem of the sticky throttle:-

The rubber part on the spring is catching on the large inlet pipe when returning, if someone's got a pic of what this area is supposed to look like that would be helpful.

Also it looks like the fuel pipe in the drivers wing is pretty ropey, what's the best bet for replacing - aftermarket or porsche part?

Cheers,

Dunc.
