944 turbo work done, is the bill OK?

As someone who hasn't used JMG I didn 't think Ewan was making anything other than a factual statement based on his own experience. In fact, Ewan appears quite proud to knowledge his car is 'JMG Modified' in his signature. Maybe I am missing something here? [&:]

Yes you are mate. A few private conversations between Ewan and myself.

JMG : not only highly competent as Pete says, but on the occasion I travelled over to Bournemouth to view a car, and asked for ramp access for inspection, it was FOC. Very decent I thought.

Okay Dokey ! [;)]

I'm most certainly not slaughtering Jon - he's very knowledgeable and a top bloke. Though it would be nice if he was a still a bit more "hands on" with the spanners. My comment on price was not a criticism, just a statement. And it appears many others that use alternative Porsche specialist garages have experienced the same. All I was trying to do was let the OP know that the price he had been charged was more than fair. Trust that clears any confusion.

Pete - any decision on your car? Is it being sold, or is Jon going to shoe-horn that spare 3.2 engine into her???

It's obvious to me from the posts on here that hardly any, if any of you, know that since we got back from the Nurburgring in May of this year, Jon has been very seriously ill in Hospital with DVT's and serious Blood Clots on his lungs! He only got discharged a couple of weeks ago and is still having trouble breathing and walking. He is on Warfarin for the foreseeable future and, has to have Tinzaparin injections in his stomache and, Blood tests twice a week! This is a real b1tch for Jon as, he loves his work and wants to return as soon as possible. Fortunately, he has very capable staff that are keeping the firm running in his absence. He is now managing to come in to work a couple of afternoons per week to do some consultancy work and to make sure everything is tickety boo [;)]. Ewan mate, i'm gonna have a bigger one than you!!![:D][8D]

That sounds horrible. I knew that he had been poorly but thought that it was a knee injury.

Yes Simon, we thought at first that it was a knee injury due to all the walking that we were doing during the 24hr race, although I did have my doubts as, the same thing happened to me five years ago(It completely changed my life and, the way I was living it)!!! The good thing to come out of this is that Jon' has now stopped smoking and, is losing a bit of weight which, when all's said and done, can't be a bad thing![:)]. As it was, he was certainly in a life threatening situation.

Hi Chaps, not wanting to hijack this thread and talk about my health and how things will be changing at JMG, I might start another one just to let people be in the picture...

But for this topic, we usually charge a fixed price of around £750 (from memory) for a head gasket replacement on a turbo, including the gaskets, seals and inspection as we proceed, but if there is a reason for it to be complicated for some reason, such as our investigation before or following head removal not showing logic that it is just the head gasket, this can turn into a "paying by the hour" job.. I think this has been our fixed price for about the last 10 years. I think Ewans turned expensive due to the car having complications, which turned out to be a hidden crack in the exhaust port, behind the ceramic and around the valve guide... Numerous tests, investigation and time were needed on that one, with eventually the whole head being scrapped as part of the repair.

For a head skim, we would recommend some caution, the head can only have a finite and a small amount of material removed via skimming before the compression ratio goes beyond a level where the engine will become detonation prone and you need to know where to measure the head to make sure you do not go beyond this skimming limit. We try to not skim a head unless it really needs it and then only by the minimum it needs to make it serviceable.

I don't think the price the original poster mentioned was at all bad, it also depends who did it and where they are based, you have to pay for knowledge, skills and kit, but also down here in Bournemouth for example, the costs of keeping the lights on and the workshop paid for are about the same as London and many times more than "Ooop north" and someone has to pay those costs otherwise the business goes under.

On that vein, all our prices are currently under review, and some things may be becoming more expensive and some cheaper as part of a reorganization which is planned in the very near future of how we do things.
