944GTP

A friend has just returned from visiting the Porsche museum, very kindly he'd agreed to get me some pics of the 944GTP. Sadly it was behind glass in the workshop but he still got some pretty good shots. I've posted a couple below in case anyone else is interested as it seems to be a bit of a rarity to see new pics of this car.

The high res versions have much better detail and if anyone wants to see them please email me (they're just under 3meg each).

Is that really a cheap seventies after-market repeater bolted to the top of the wing??? Please tell me it is something much more technical!

Beautiful car.. even today would upset some of the best that Porsche could put up against it in todays model list[:)]

Glad you all liked them, rather than email them out to everyone I've uploaded them onto webshots where you can view them full size.

Those are indeed very nasty lights Tref (I think they're on with the side lights at Le Mans). It's in good company though, even the 962 has some really naff lights under its covers.

Oh yes [:D]

Knowing my luck it'd be away when I visited though! I'm hoping they're planning to run the car given it's in the workshop, would be great if they let it out once in a while.

Lovely pictures thanks for sharing :)

Found this book here which describes the car as finishing 7th overall at Le Man in 1981, says it had a 16v head as well wonder why Porsche took so long to release a 16v head on the production cars if they had one in 1981?

Just checked this book is available through www.nectar.com for 8,200 points.... hmmmmm.....

Fantastic!

Can you email me those hi-res shots?

I looked deep into my archives (I knew I had it) and dug out this
to add to the conversation.
Wish I had it higher res, but it prints out quite nice all the same!

Wonder how many were made - the one in the advert has vents
on the badge panel, I imagine it would be a later model?

Hi Thomas, I added a link in post 6 to the high res pics (sorry, hyperlinks aren't very easy to spot on this forum). I love that advert too, but I hadn't noticed the differences between the two.

Thanks for the Link David, I'll have a read of that later [:D]

Neil, the wheels are a centre lock BBS design. One day I hope to build a 'replica' of this car which is why I'm trying to get as much info as I can, but the thought of getting suitable wheels for it fill me full of dread!

Sorry about that, I'd just missed that link! [:D]

Looking at Wikipedia (yes, that infallible source for everything), there
was only one 944 GTP made, given that every now and again race cars
have a jostle maybe it's the same car with a new font section?

On another note, can anyone tell me the difference between
the 944 GTP we're looking at here and a 944 GTR like this one?

I somehow think the price would be similar enough for both.....

944 GTP: 924 GTP: 944 Le Mans. Even Porsche couldnt decide what to call it. Its technical significance is certain though, the 924 GTP introduced the 944s short engine, which they turbocharged and added a 16v cylinder head.

I believe the GTR model was the one developed by Porsche America and not related to the 944 GTP from europe?

According to that book I linked to above the 924 GTP ran in 1980 and was replaced by the 944 GTP with the turbo and bigger inline 4 cylinder 16 valve in 1981.

That was my understanding too, there was a good article about that red car in Excellence a while back, I'll have a look if I can find it later.
