I was just wondering as we all know the 944 series is a sweet little handler, how fast have you had yours "on a private road of coarse which is free from normal traffic, lerner drivers, old people, children, small animals, shall i go on???????????????????????????

I had my old 944s up to about 140MPH (2 up - with 2 weeks worth of luggage) [8D] - Only speed limited by Dutch cars towing caravans pulling into the left lane of the Autobahn at random moments.[][>:][:'(][8|]

i did have my 944s 2.5 16v up to 115 easisly but my worn torque tube bearings told me no more, had plenty to go though...........

152mph (indicated) and still accelerating on an autobahn [8D]..........until the auto pilot engaged and dropped the speed to 120mph.........................

................................(For autopilot read wife shouting hysterically [8|] )

I had mine up to about 125mph before, I enjoy the mid-range acceleration more however, accelerating from 50/60mph to 110mph is a very good feeling [8D][;)]

In the chipped and de-catted 944 'S' I used to go to le-mans last summer I held an indicated 160mph three times over the course of the weekend but the car did NOT want to hold that for long (sounded strained and temp started rising). I believe it was just into the red line on the revs.

Regards,

Ben

p.s. I think my passenger had a picture somewhere not might not be sensible to share it!

easy indicated 160mph on the M2 in my 944t a few years back - along that lovely section past the services - only two lanes but a very straight bit with a slight descent. Car felt OK with no temperature problems or vibrations and was happy at 150mph for two or three minutes. This was at the dead of night and in the more or less full knowledge that the BIB were tid up elsewhere.

In mainland europe and some mods back (under 300BHP) I hit a GPS recorded max of 156, the next year a fellow contributor hit 155 on the same stretch, I wont mention his name but he now has some extensive engine mods to ensure 157 next time ;)
Tony
(Speedo needle well over the 160 in both cases)

Ben's navigation isnt good he always goes to le Mans via the isle of man and germany [:D]

How I knew Ben would be posting on this thread. [;)]

I am happy to confirm that Beaky feels very stable at 70mph. I have no idea if he goes any faster as I have never tried.

Mine is un modded (boost enhancer only) and 253bhp and would do 155 IMO no problem

Held 148 -152 ish for some 4 ish minutes (so did an M5 trying to lose me [8D]) on an amazing unrestricted autobahn that starts off from a small cross road so no one and I mean no one on is on it, water temp rose slightly but the car was rock solid with aerodynamics really kicking in properly at about 130 when you felt the car `pushed` down onto the tarmac and settling into its task. Steering got weightier and feedback through suspension more noticeable.

Gonna be doing more of that later this year [;)]

I believe it was just into the red line on the revs.

IIRC (it was demanding concentration) mine was just under the red at 152

Yes the piece of road wasnt long enough or in the right country - a trip to germany for a return to the ring and high speed autobahn work is high priority [;)]

159 mph indicated last summer, S2 with minor mods that I doubt add much hp. Probably about 150 real speed which is what S2 should do. Can't remmember where the rev neddle was, to busy watching the road. Stunned how stable the car was, and how slow 70 mph feels after speed like that. Also stunned how amazingly quickly the car looses speed when you lift off at 150+.

I believe your speedo may be under-reading by approx. 30 mph.......[;)]

My standard S2 has indicated 155 mph a few times but it is probably less. It is easy to get to 140s, did so twice yesterday, but fuel consumption is poor for extended periods above 130 mph.

I just want to know what speed Charles Cabriolet was doing to snap his speedo needle right off [:D]

Sorry Charles [X(]

1 more is all that's needed [;)]

To be honest my car felt really unstable at that speed and I bottled out because the front wheels were wobbling like mad. When I got home I had the wheels rebalanced and they were well out [] With the standard gearing, tyres and RPM limiter our cars can 'only' get to 171mph IIRC. If VMAX ever sort out the noise problems at Bruntingthorpe I'd like to have another go at getting there (after I've balanced my wheels again [:)])
