944S2 & 968 Comparison

928's are an itch I am still wanting scratch at some point. Bigger than a 944 of course but they do like corners despite being very much a GT car in my eyes at least (some of their enthusiasts maintain they are more than that). Yes expensive if they go wrong and comfortably more complex than any 944. Mechanically strong but its the electrics that can cause severe financial pain. I think they look great in the right colour and prefer the later S4 onwards rear end.
 
I've driven a couple and been chauffered in a couple and they definately are more refined (I didn't say more powerful ). I think it's a combination of the Varioram engine, the dual mass flywheel and the much slicker 6 speed gearbox.

I've not been in one for many years, so can't give a back-to-back comparison. Makes sense, I guess. Still stand by the principle that buying an S2 and putting some serious money into it will give a better car, in most cases, than spending more on a 968 and not putting any money into it. If that makes any sense! [:D]

I would not recommend either car for taking children in the back. Yes, there are so called seats in the back, but unless your kids have no legs, they are going to be very uncomfortable and unhappy.

I carry my kids (6 and 5) in the back regularly. I expect they'll be comfortable until about 11 or 12 years old at which point headroom will be a problem. Although if front-seat passengers have extremely long legs than I can see how legroom could be an issue.

In terms of 968 vs 944, it really depends on how much OP wants to spend. 10k is enough to buy a 968 Coupe or Sport with enough left to take care of any major bits that need doing. 6k should be sufficient for an S2. Minty-mint 968 CSes seem to be selling in the teens although the driving experience isn't far removed at all.
In my view discussions of "is it worth the extra" are a bit beside the point because most people start with a target budget and then buy the best car they can get for that budget (is a new 997 worth 2 993s, 6 968s or 10 S2s?)
 
The 968 is mostly let down by its gearbox - the shifting feel is terrible and ratios were shortened over the S2's in order to compensate for the weight increase over the S2 while still retaining a somewhat swift feel, as the engine suffers from a lack of torque at this level of weight.

I know the back seats are a bit cramped, but I have had 2 adults in back without complaints, and 1 of them was a 6ft'er.

?? Now that must have been a tight fit....

I use my Turbo as a daily driver, had an "944S" before.

Agree with the majority of comments already made, if you get a turbo the boost enhancer and dual port wastegate should be on your shopping list if it hasn't got them already :)

I just love the way the turbo delivers power....


 
I used to run my Silver Rose Turbo as a daily driver 15 yrs ago post divorce and one of my new "friends" then had three sons 7-11 yrs and they would squeeze in the back with no complaints. The 924/944/968 body is practical for many people as an everyday car. I was able to do HOMEBASE last w/end and bought 6' long shelving and was able to lock the car whilst I was doing other shopping.
 
My last engine went well, but it did have a smoother power delivery than my new one and it wasn't a slouch. The new one simply turns into a bit of an animal after 4k (OK, not like a Turbo, but enough to notice a difference in pull from the bottom end). Indeed in 5th gear, going from 3k up, you can notice the car pulling quicker about 4k (down a straight airfield).

968 is pricey for what they are and tuning is limited without big bucks

S2 is ok but you sound like you dont hang about so I feel you would consider an S2 a good car but a bit `lazy`

928 is a big risk particularly electrics and if you arent a mechanic they can offer huge bills in comparison to a 944. They get hot inside and appear quircky but are a very good and increasingly rare and unusual car to own. Buy the later ones with many of the original issues ironed out but drive a 944T before you commit [;)]

944T - if kept on boost is a very exhilerating experience and turbo lag can be addressed relatively cheaply (as can additional power) - Fine for small kids, not for teenagers in the back.

I guess its all opinions but I really like the 968 g'box.

If you want power 944T every time.
