944S2 Performance chips, any good?

I've been looking at the possibility of fitting a performance chip. I am quite happy with the performance of mine but they seem quite cheap and easy to fit for a few more bhp and torque, there's some here

from America, I just wondered what the general concensus is, which would you recommend? Would you even bother? Are they really any good or harm come to that?

As always look forward to the following chatter [;)]

The Promax chip is as good as any on the market and has always topped the lists when we have done our back to back Dyno Day tests. For £99 I don't think you can go far wrong for a proven product from a UK supplier

I really liked my Promax chip on the S2, much more fun to drive as it improved overall driveability. However we discovered that my car was running a non standard chip (it was unbranded) when I first got it so I cannot say how it really compares to standard (but assuming mine had been 'upgraded' and it was an improvement from there then I think it bodes well).

I wouldn't consider an ebay chip myself, but I've explained why I feel this a few times before so wont repeat myself [:)].

Third vote for the Promax.

To me, the upper mid-range seems torquier with it than without. My car is a bit wierd, and I have lots of experimentation always on the go. It's not a scientific technique, but then, the car is a hobby, not a 6th form project.

For the money, and the fact that Promax offer a return policy if you don't get on with it, you're not risking much. I wish all tuning parts came with the same aftersales...

Nick,

It's something I'm interested in too. Although the idea of a friendly current chip owner and an EPROM reader and a few pints of beer changing hands is quite appealing ...

Oli.

Yeah, Promax definately seems to be the way to go, they look like a really professional outfit, I will have to drop them a line.

Thanks lads

I remember reading an artical on Promax in 911 & Porsche World.
He was very impressed with there service and know how with there product.
On non cat versions of the S2 there is an exhaust up grade also for an extra £169.95 to give the full bonus of the chip.
For the cat version S2 the cost are £369.95 as there is a stainless cat by pass with the exhaust system.

Anyone carried this out with a full rolling road before and after print out?

How do you know if your S2 has a cat? Heres a photo of mine, is that a cat or a silencer??

The cat is the box inbetween the front and rear scilencer.
Also these fetch good money for reclaim scrap metal so don't let it go.
Thinking about that it is worth keeping the rest of the system if in good condition!

On the S2 the rear exhaust system is a single piece with 2 silencer boxes, the first a small straight through box that sits near the rear suspension torsion bar carrier and the second bigger box. In the picture above the bottom 2 boxes are the 2 silencers in the stock rear system. The catalytic converter is the big section at the top of that picture that looks like lots of sections joined together. I remember several years back when I took mine off (it was falling apart inside) the thing was amazingly heavy and about twice the size of the cats you see on many other cars.

Picked this up from my local Europarts this morning, nice and shiney Dansk [:D]

The only one the firm had in stock, had to wait for it to come from their Belfast depot. I'm really pleased with it, not fitting it though until I speak to Promax, still got some pennies burning a hole in my pocket.

Europarts couldn't get me the gasket for it, think its more like a ring than a gasket, anyone know wheres the best place to pick up the right one?

Yes they are substantial and you right in thinking they are a ring and not just a gasket. I had a Dansk on my old car, cant say it made any performace gains but the car sounded faster.[:D]

For the price, think I paid about £110 a couple of years ago they are very well made and fit spot on.
