944T vs Esprit T

ORIGINAL: 944Turbo

There used to be a Green flame spitting V8 esprit (one of the last shape) on goldtrack days. I think Mr Smith might have had a chat with him at one point,

Yes, I remember that one. It was one of the twin Turbo V8's and the owner did admit he had spent many thousands ££££ on modifications. On the main runway straight at Bruntingthorpe, Tony and I were dead matched with him in a straight line and I only had a Guru chip and a shimmed standard wastegate at the time. I know I had track rubber on at the time and he dropped back quickly in the corners, which was most satisfying [:)]

The chap I bought my 944T from only sold because he'd moved on to a V8 Esprit. My first drive in my "˜new' car was a hoon with him and the Esprit "¦ and I was definitely faster. Then again, I was stepping quite hard on the boost pedal and grinning like an idiot!

Wasn't there a model also called a gt3 or something, these used to go for about £20K.

The GT3 is the one that appeals to me most. From what I have found out so far, the GT3 was a similar concept to the 968 CS, in that it was a cheaper, lower spec (no air-con etc) model. Engine is 2 litre turbo rather than the normal 2.2 litre. A bit less power but a lot lighter and more focussed. And they look fantastic [:D]

La la la... not reading this [][:D]

One of the things that makes me hesitate is that I dont remember ever seeing one on track. Will be interesting if there is one at Silverstone on Monday - hopefully I find out that I can run rings around them in the '44 and put the daft idea out of my head for good!

Might have some video somewhere - did look pretty but wouldn't be surprised if the owner has a 944T now :)

Its going to be very wet on Monday so if anything something FWD lightweight and on decent all weather tyres would probably out corner any of our cars. TBH on the one hand I see it as an oppurtunity to run in the wet OTOH my car has morphed more towards full race setup now so a water logged Silverstone could be 'interesting', especially after watching our cars struggle to stay on the black stuff at Thruxton last weekend.

Last time out I had track rubber (very worn and not road legal on the rear) and I think almost everything passed us in the first couple of sessions - worst was a saxo! On the new tarmac there didn't really seem to be a wet line either. Once it started to dry out a bit it was better and I got some of those fwd hatches back, wished I had put the road tyres in!

Oh yes. The GT3 is a thing of beauty. [8D] That car used to be on my "When I'm old enough and the price is low enough..." list.

Tony the Dunlops seem to work really well once you get some heat into them, that's one problem. The other problem is standing water. I drove my car up to Brum and back today to get a few odd jobs done, man it was like driving into a wall of water on a couple of occasions. I didn't risk it and dropped down to 60 when I could see sheet water so I don't know at what speed these tyres aquaplane.

Back on subject TBH the late model espirits have never really appealed to me because in its era and price bracket its competing with the likes of the NSX or the 993 both of which have the properly sexy soundtrack that the 4 pot lotus lacks.

I had a few ding dongs with an Esprit in Last years future classics,it was a non turbo but properly developed,no lights and all Rose jointed everywhere,it went very well, don't think I ever beat it,nearly at the last Donnington race but he got me in the pitstop as he could get in and out quicker than I could.
It looked pretty beautiful on the circuit like a White wedge, pretty much like the "Spy who loved me" Submarine 007 car.
